Also at @e0mI get into a lot of Wikipedia rabbit holes. They tend to be related to history, space, transit, airplanes, or other random sciences. Recently it’s been a lot about AI. When not there I'm likely thinking about food. Now I’m excited to be a part of safely bringing artificial general intelligence to the world. ChatGPT and GPT-4 is only the beginning. The future here is very exciting. Before OpenAI and before San Francisco, I was building out an engineering office with Nylas in NYC. I enjoy speaking at conferences and events (http://evanmorikawa.com/), and had an opportunity with Nylas talking about building highly scalable email, calendar, and contact APIs. Before that it was about pushing the boundaries of Electron, React, and javascript to build a highly extensible open source desktop email client called Nylas Mail (https://github.com/nylas/nylas-mail).I was bit by the startup bug early in college and have never looked back. I think some part of me enjoys a healthy amount of existential angst at all times. Mostly it's driven by my desire to work with people I deeply respect and my need for the agency to help build the team and company I want.I used to fly a lot. For two years it was flights every other week between SF & NYC. I'm highly opinionated that Juliana's in Brooklyn has the best pizza and El Metate in San Francisco has the best burritos. Instead of talking about the weather, my default small-talk subject is to compare SF and NYC.One random fact about me is that I can tell you where I was, who I was with, and what I was doing, with 30 minute granularity for every moment since 2007. I use my calendar as a very detailed journal, and I haven’t missed a day. Finally, I have an abnormally strong desire to hear about other people's life stories. If you want to tell me yours, my DMs are open on Twitter (https://twitter.com/e0m), and I'm at {{first_name}}@evanmorikawa.com

Ceo & Co-FounderAlight Learning Oct 2008 - Feb 2010Needham, Ma, UsWe started Alight Learning during an "entrepreneurial sabbatical" from Olin College. Myself and 5 others decided to take year off between our sophomore and junior years to "do something entrepreneurial". A shared interest in education drew us to do dozens of exploratory interviews with Boston area middle school teachers. Out of those user studies, we developed our product and company.Alight Learning lets students work on real-time collaborative projects, share resources with each other, and freely communicate in an educational context. Teachers can create lessons personalized to the needs of every student and can engage with students to give authentic and formative feedback.I helped build the initial application (LAMP stack), and did much of the design work. We worked with dozens of middle school teachers in the Boston & Providence areas to co-design the product around their lesson plans. -
