Hi. I’m Evan. I love technology, problem solving, design, and awesome bass lines.I was always the kid who would try and figure out how things work. I remember getting our first family desktop computer. I just had to know what all those parts did inside that case. So, one night I did what any curious tech kid would do—I took it apart. All of it.As I sat in triumph amidst a sea of memory chips, circuit boards, and drive cables, I suddenly realized I needed to put this back together by morning! I spent the next several hours puzzling out what fits where and trying to remember where each part went. It was stressful and a little scary, but I did it. No internet, no friends to ask for help. Just trial-and-error and problem solving.That’s my style. I like to think about a particular task or problem, and think of ways to approach it. Then I dive in. I like to work in short bursts, test my results, iterate and try again. For example, when writing SQL I start with the simplest query I can think of that is relevant to the information I need. Then, when that works, I’ll add a bit more onto the query. I do this until it doesn’t work, then I reevaluate my strategy, and try again.I apply a learn-by-doing approach to most aspects of my life. That’s not to say I don’t value learning through more traditional means—I absolutely do. But experience has been my greatest teacher. This is true whether I’m troubleshooting faulty hardware, re-thinking SQL queries, building and testing a new document automation process, or practicing user interface design.And about those awesome bass lines... I’ve been a bass player since I was a teenager. I love playing music and being in a band. Bass isn't flashy or in the spotlight much. It's a role that supports the rest of the band and makes us sound better as a whole. It's perfect fit for me. And you guessed it—I applied my learn-by-doing approach here as well.
