About Evan Nastarowicz
I am in my final year of the 5-year B.S./M.S. program in Mechanical Engineering at Rutgers University, where I have studied and gained experience with control, robotics, manufacturing, renewable energy, and economics. I’ve spent my time in New Brunswick and at various other places developing a variety of skills for mechanical and software projects. As a researcher at the Advanced Manufacturing Sciences Laboratory, I utilize mechatronics and problem-solving skills to develop large-area additive manufacturing technologies. Here, I have designed a custom 3D printing gantry fixed atop a Create 3 robot with an isolated electrical system for robotic fleet printing. My graduate thesis is focused on solving automated sensing and control problems using Python and ROS, including the localization of the robot for printing consecutive sections in-plane. The ultimate goal for this project is to print multimeter-scale parts unconstrained by a traditional gantry with the ability to realign the motor axes after climbing atop previously deposited layers. I contributed to various other projects here throughout my undergraduate studies; my research in the summer of 2022 was recognized in the New Jersey Space Grant Consortium supported by NASA, where I analyzed the impact a heated roller has on the final object geometry in standard FDM processes. I have also contributed to a variety of other projects here, including machining parts for a patented multi-extruder printer (MF3), writing Python scripts for custom g-code command outputs for 3D printers, and using MATLAB for data manipulation and presentation. While completing my graduate studies, I have continued working for Solar Landscape as a Photovoltaic Design Engineer since May of this year. This has challenged me to continually learn about solar industry software, electrical codes, and best practices while effectively managing my time commitments to school.I’d love to have conversations about my experiences!

Solar Design Engineer
- Create commercial rooftop solar system designs using PVSyst and Helioscope software for large-scale Community Solar and behind-the-meter projects (100-5000 kWDC) and evaluate optimal choices for modules, inverters, and optimizers.- Assist in performing site assessments to collect data on existing electrical systems for interconnection planning and ensuring minimal setbacks through the construction and operation phases of projects.- Collaborate with project managers to maintain operations timeline while ensuring high quality documentation for utility and internal engineering purposes.
Graduate Researcher
Research Projects:- Designed and assembled a fully custom 3-axis electromechanical system atop a differential wheeled robot capable of 3D printing for the purpose of breaking meter-scale objects into smaller sections and climbing atop deposited layers.- Write custom Python scripts to simultaneously operate the printing system wirelessly using OctoPrint API and maneuver the robotic base autonomously using feedback control from on-board odometry and external sensor measurements.- Contribute to design (CAD), testing, and software for other research areas, including Multiplexed Fused Filament Fabrication (MF3), printed line width sample generation and machine learning prediction, and aluminum part machining.- Lead future design by undergraduate team using extensive system knowledge for better reliability and fleet printing.New Jersey Space Grant Consortium (Summer 2022): - Designed and machined attachments for an off-the-shelf 3D printer to trail the nozzle with heated rollers and compress lines as they are deposited for stronger interlayer adhesion without sacrificing desired part shape.- Planned a comprehensive set of 750+ printing samples to generate a predictive transfer learning model for change in part geometry and void fraction because of different compressive masses, line separations, and layer heights.- Research was presented to support the Science Mission Directorate of NASA through their educational research division.
Mechatronics Engineering Intern
- Designed a compact, lightweight 80” vertical lift system and second-generation HVAC unit and casing for fully automated Micro-Fulfillment Center (MFC) while focusing on manufacturability, simplicity, and first engineering principles in a fast-paced, growing startup firm environment.- Conducted Solidworks Structural and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Simulations using self-taught industry protocols to evaluate complex parts resulting in 75% cost savings of aluminum housing extrusions proven unnecessary.- Efficiently documented all progress and decisions for future reference and personally presented my findings, conclusions, and recommendations at weekly firm-wide progress update meetings.
Product & Sales Intern
- Executed sales of electrical parts, components, and wiring for commercial and residential use in tandem with senior associates with a focus on successfully supplying clients’ entire project material needs.- Excelled in maintaining quality control and inventory integrity by auditing shipment invoices, backorders, and transfers.- Studied various product reviews and installation seminars online to undertake larger roles within the position.
Senior Counselor
- Formulated, designed, organized, and managed various programs and activities on a daily basis for groups of 100+ children in grades 3 through 5 with primary responsibility for camper engagement, safety, and welfare.- Selected 2019 Spirit Award Counselor for exhibiting exemplary leadership, teamwork, enthusiasm, and creativity. Summer 2018: Aquatic Center Manager- Maintained 0% incident record while overseeing simultaneous tasks while managing splash pad aquatic facility with responsibility for user safety, rules enforcement, and operational maintenance.
