Evan is an experienced "zero to one" technology product leader, moonshot builder, idea machine, and conservationist with a long track record of leading teams from idea to launch across several verticals. He is most passionate about biodiversity conservation, the ocean, and connecting people with nature for work and play.He originally joined Google in 2011 on the Maps team, focusing on Street View and computational photography apps for Android devices. In 2014, he moved to Google X where he rapidly evaluated moonshots. There, he founded Tidal, a moonshot using AI for aquaculture, food security, and ocean health, which spun out of Alphabet in 2024.He left Alphabet in 2017 to follow his passion for ocean conservation, becoming the founding CEO of Oceankind (a philanthropic org funded by Lucy Page) where he directed many millions of dollars of grants and impact investments (robotics, cellular agriculture, sensors, wastewater, MPA management, etc.).He then became the Senior Technology Fellow at Conservation International, where he focused a lot on nature based climate solutions and on teaching innovation best practices to the organization. In 2021, he returned to Google to lead the AI Moonshots program on the Brain team (now part of DeepMind) in Google Research. He wrapped up his Google career in 2024 by starting research projects on AI for biodiversity and nature-based climate change.Evan has taught dozens of workshops for thousands of people about innovation and "moonshot thinking" to turn ideas into reality. He has spoken at the United Nations, worked closely with C-level exec's at Fortune 100 companies and the world's largest foundations and non-profit organizations, advised former Presidents, mentored at the Stanford Lean Launchpad with Steve Blank, advised / invested in dozens of startups, and loves guest teaching in K-12 classes. At Google, he led dozens of workshops for 1,000+ new employees on how to go "From Idea to Launch" for new products.Since 2016, Evan has been on a mission to travel the world to see its most wild places while they're still relatively intact. His adventures have taken him to Kenya to volunteer in wildlife conservation, the jungles of Gabon (for gorillas and elephants), the plains of South Africa, and the forests of Colombia, Panama, and Sulawesi. He's dove with manta rays, sharks, sea turtles, and more(!) in Hawaii, French Polynesia, Fiji, and Raja Ampat. He ventured to a remote island in Tonga to swim up close with humpback whales and off the coast of Mexico to swim with dozens of whale sharks.

Lead Product Manager, Nature For ClimateGoogle May 2023 - May 2024Mountain View, Ca, UsI was the product lead in Google Research for "Nature for Climate", which is part of our broader Climate team. I focused on identifying massive opportunities where AI and other advanced technologies can help protect nature and biodiversity while combating climate change. Since nature-based solutions are some of IPCC's top recommendations for mitigation, this is extremely important area that the world should pay more attention to. I hope that our research advances will make this happen. -
Moonshots Lead, Google Research (Brain)Google Aug 2021 - May 2023Mountain View, Ca, UsI led the Moonshots program on the Brain team within Google Research. We funded a portfolio of extremely ambitious, early-stage AI research projects that could become the next big breakthroughs to benefit Google products and the world. At the 2023, Google I/O keynote, several of the projects I worked on were featured, including the generative AI projects Med-PaLM 2, Phenaki (text to video), and Imagen (text-to-image). I also helped establish the Sustainability priority area within Brain through funding two moonshots focused on biodiversity and climate change. -
Senior Technology FellowConservation International Aug 2020 - Jul 2021Arlington, Virginia, UsIn this year-long fellowship, I helped bring scale into the conservation world by advancing the use of technology to help nature and people, especially on natural climate solutions and preventing biodiversity loss. I identified unique approaches for nonprofits and philanthropists to have moonshot-level impact by building creative partnerships for conservation with innovative technology companies. Finally, I advised executives to help them understand how to integrate best practices for innovation and execution from Silicon Valley. -
CeoOceankind Oct 2017 - Oct 2019San Francisco Bay Area, Ca, UsAs the founding CEO, I partnered with principal Lucy Page and her family office to start this new philanthropic organization to bring “moonshot thinking” into ocean conservation. I developed a vision, budget strategy, and deal pipeline to de-risk and advance ideas from seed funding for rapid experiments up through large multi-year projects. We provided millions of dollars of venture and grant capital to innovative organizations to develop potential solutions to the most critical global marine challenges (primarily climate change and overfishing / sustainable seafood).I hired and built a world-class team of full-time employees and dozens of consultants while empowering them to lead their own projects and creating a healthy culture based on intellectual honesty and respect. Additionally, I collaborated directly with top executives of major foundations and NGOs (a highlight was a day helping President Obama and his foundation on leadership development). To get started, I interviewed 100+ experts and leaders across conservation, ocean engineering, and food production to assess the state of the field and identify unique opportunities with high-risk, high-reward, long-term impact that met the giving profile of the Principals. For example, we quickly became the thought-leader on cell-based seafood alternatives (aka "lab-grown seafood") as a potential approach to produce sustainable seafood to address the horrors of overfishing. -
Project Lead And Co-Founder, TidalX, The Moonshot Factory Jul 2015 - Oct 2017Mountain View, Ca, UsI was the project lead and co-founder of Tidal, a moonshot to protect the ocean and make aquaculture more sustainable (https://x.company/projects/tidal/). We partnered with one of the largest aquaculture companies in the world and developed artificial intelligence and camera systems to dramatically improve operations. Less than 1% of X investigations ever get this far.Received two patents on aquaculture technology and artificial intelligence. -
Senior Product ManagerX, The Moonshot Factory Oct 2014 - Dec 2016Mountain View, Ca, UsAs a Product Manager and rapid evaluator of Moonshots at X (formerly Google X), I identified and advanced new ideas that could become X projects and Alphabet companies. At X, we used a process of rapid evaluation, prototyping, failing fast, and strategic partnerships to explore areas outside of Google's core business. My investigations focused primarily on addressing huge problems in food production, oceans, conservation, and emerging markets. I also was the product lead on a consumer electronics project.I love helping other organizations develop the skills to pursue innovative high risk / high reward projects. To support this, I often gave talks and lead workshops for X on "Moonshot Thinking", including at the United Nations, Stanford University, Singularity University, Conservation International, and for Fortune 500 companies (our partners), executive conferences, government officials, indigenous leaders, and K12 students. -
Product ManagerGoogle Aug 2011 - Oct 2014Mountain View, Ca, UsProduct Manager focused on new products, going "from idea to launch" with company-wide impact on Google Maps, Street View, Search, Android, Photos, Clips, YouTube, & Daydream.
