FR8RAIL II PROJEKT--- Automation of freight train brake test

Master thesis project on public transit priority on coordinated traffic signals. The project aims to compare the optimized signal timings from both LinSig and TRANSYT followed by microsimulation in VISSIM. Both of these tools optimize signal times based on delay and its derivatives. LinSig optimizes based on delay or maximum reserve capacity while TRANSIT optimization is based on user-defined performance index (P.I) involving delay, progression, stops and fuel consumption. This two software vary in their suitability for use and ability to accurately model traffic situations and behaviors. This thesis, therefore, aims to compare the performance of these two optimization tools.The project is done using a case study on östra_promenaden Norrköpping kommun Sweden.

• This was a road expansion project in the city of Nairobi. The project involved dualization of the one of the cities major arterials to ease congestion and provide better accessibility to the city center. • The project set up was international and my role as the assistant consulting engineer was the coordination and quality control (KMA). At some point I took the full responsibly for the being the chief consulting engineer in the absence of my boss. Some of the key success aspect of this project were efficient planning and implementation in addition to flexibility from all major stakeholders.• I was also involved in coordination and management of the various stakeholders ranging from government institutions and ministries, property owners along the road reserve and utility providers. I was also responsible for the drafting and presenting regular project reports to inform decision making on funding and to manage any potential risks.• Due to the importance of this project I was delegated to represent my company in a team consultant in collaboration with the European Commission in the Institute of Transport development to prepare guidelines on the design of circle paths, walk paths as well as the pavement design for the road. This project is special in Kenya. For the first time we proposed design changes which could include both motorized and non-motorized transport for the second phase of the project.• My interest in transportation planning and traffic analysis originated from the urban congestion problems in Kenya. I decided to study transportation to find solutions on how to manage travel demand, provide efficient transport not only for economic reasons but also for sustainability and social reasons. Less time spent on traffic could mean more family times at home!.

This project was key to the achievement of Kenya’s medium-term development blueprint Vision 2030.In this project, we worked to draft planning guidelines and development control policies. The project aimed at ensuring an appropriate balance between infrastructure service provision and demand management coupled with sustainability. Some of the interesting ideas we developed include:• Densification and infill development in some parts of Nairobi to provide new housing facilities together with supportive infrastructures like piped water, electricity and solid waste collection zones.• Proposed the creation of two separate departments from the parent ministry of transport. National transport safety authority to monitor to monitor safety on roads and driving regulations. Public transport authority to oversee regulation of the existing uncoordinated matatu sector and the implementation of the new proposed bus rapid transit.• Designing stormwater management strategies and facilities to avoid perennial property damage and interference with the transport system during rainy seasons. Some of the proposed strategies include water collection ponds and the use of sustainable urban drainage system.• Gazetting new areas as “green zones” to prevent exploitation by growth and urban development pressure. Most of these new zones are located next to Nairobi national park and the Karura forest. There was, therefore, a need to expand the ecological reach and maintain the provisional and regulatory functionality of forest ecosystem
