Formerly Director of Insurance with Eversheds, Solicitors in the City of London, and later a consultant to the firm on corporate and regulatory insurance law (1997-2009). I have also acted as a consultant on London Insurance Market issues to North American insurance corporations.I was a Non-Executive Director with NFU Mutual Assurance Society and Remuneration Committee chairman (2000-2010) and was the Chairman of the Pearl Group Ltd and latterly Phoenix Life Holdings (2005-2010). I have also served as a director on the Boards of Ignis Investment Management Ltd, Ignis Fund Managers Ltd, Britannic Assurance Ltd, National Provident Life Ltd, NPI Ltd, London Life Ltd, and Phoenix Pensions Ltd. I was Chairman of the Phoenix Group subsidiary life companies until September 2016.I served two terms in Parliament, including in Government as Corporate Affairs Minister at the Department of Trade and Industry, and then as deputy to the Lord Chancellor.I was also later Chairman of the All-Party Groups for Insurance and Financial Services, Wholesale Financial Markets and Services and the Financial Mutual sector, where I delivered new legislation on regulatory capital.I was Vice Chairman of the All-Party Group on Classical Music, and was awarded an Industry and Parliament Trust Fellowship for my work with the Royal Opera House, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and the Tate Gallery.Between 1999 and 2009, I served in the European Parliament as Leader of the Conservative delegation (2001-2004), President of the Delegation for Relations with the US Congress (2004-2009) and on the Advisory Board of the Transatlantic Economic Council (2007-2009).Between 2013 and 2015 I was appointed to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
