Exhibitions across the world have become incredibly successful at creating immersive environments that tell broad conceptual stories-but not so good at telling tight, focused stories. Think about how often museums have collections of a variety objects acting as guideposts to a single topic, but how rare it is to read anything in depth about a single object. There is incredible power that comes from a deep dive into an object. In Southland, Project Ark is trying to digitise local collections with more than the standard 50 words of narrative, and get more in-depth. For many smaller regions, researching single pieces, collecting narratives and anecdotes about them can be time-consuming and expensive. Pikopiko aims to change this. The app attempts to make crowdsourcing research around local collections simple for the galleries, and engaging for their audiences.
