Evan Snapp work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Claims Specialist
I was appointed as a Public Insurance (Claims) Specialist with the Social Security Administration in Sandusky, Ohio. My specialization was in Title 2, the trust fund that distributes Retirement, Disability, and Survivors's benefits. This public-facing role requires extensive knowledge of internal policies and procedures, technical programs, data responsibility, and customer service.
Administrative Assistant
I was assigned temporary contract work through the Robert Half agency at OneSeagate Partners (Toledo, OH) and Total Fleet Solutions (Perrysburg, OH) to fill administrative gaps at the companies and quickly learn the tools of the job. I am glad to have had these opportunities to practice my office management and data entry/analysis skills.
Program Assistant
I joined the team at Crim Elementary School in Bowling Green to provide a safe, educational, and fun environment for students aged 5-12 in the Community Learning Center day program. My role required program management, lesson/activity planning, and direct supervision of groups of about 20 children. I provided for a healthy social environment and followed individualized support plans for students with developmental disabilities and behavioral issues. Our program partnered with other community organizations to facilitate the distribution of food and administration of first aid when necessary. This was a valuable experience in patience and compassion, and I felt grateful to give back to the BG community during my summer after grad school.
Peace Corps Fellows Graduate Assistant
While pursuing my Master's of Public Administration, I was hired as a Graduate Assistant for the Center for Public Impact, and BGSU's Graduate College. My role included heading the strong community of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers at BGSU, as well as liaising between Peace Corps, the various relevant departments of the University, and our numerous community partners. I also assisted in running the Peace Corps Prep certificate program in the department of International Studies. This Assistantship was an exciting way to merge my past experiences in public service, with the ever-changing academic landscape of one of America's best public universities.
Advocacy And Research Intern
La Conexion is a Latinx-community and recent immigrant-focused 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Northwest Ohio. As an intern and assistant to the Executive Director, I participated in state and federal advocacy efforts for new legislation pieces. I also acted as a remote data specialist and web developer, providing support for the organization's use of record-keeping and client resource management software. This experience showed me an in-depth look at a socially-minded,l volunteer-driven nonprofit organization.
Peace Corps Volunteer
I served as a Literacy Specialist for Saint Andrew's Roman Catholic School, in Saint Andrew, Grenada. I was a part of the larger Education Sector of the Peace Corps Eastern Caribbean post. My role in teaching at the school combined one-on-one interventions, small-group tutoring, and whole-class lessons for approximately 120 students each year, from grades 2-4. My literacy intervention plans helped students gain standardized reading levels at 1.4x the normal classroom rate. I also acted as a coordinator of afterschool enrichment programs, including a new school Concert Band and Gifted Readers' Club. In two years, my clubs had an attendance rate of 85% for a roster of 60 involved students. I measure my impact at the school, as well, by the number of teachers (8) who I partnered with to deliver greater IT expertise and student-centered classroom management techniques. Overall, my time in the Peace Corps was marked by challenging new experiences, but also gratitude and enjoyment.
Americorps Member
City Year is an education-focused nonprofit which seeks to fill the gap between what students need and what they receive from teachers and administrators in urban schools. I partnered with Medrano Middle School in the northwest Dallas community and primarily served 6th grade students in an English classroom. I instructed small groups of students in individualized literacy-based lessons, and worked to bridge language gaps for our 95% hispanic student body. I coached students in goal-setting for better attendance and classroom behavior, and attentively provided for the social-emotional welfare of the students. I facilitated two after-school tutoring clubs (Creative Writing Club & Modern Band), and designed and carried out periodic family engagement events including a community Halloween festival. I communicated directly with parents of students, community members, and school administrators in English and Spanish. City Year was an immensely rewarding experience that forced me to critically examine and then try to make a positive impact on the many barriers and challenges in the public education system.
Meek Aquatics Facility Manager
While in college, I worked at the Meek Aquatics Center of OWU. From 2013 to 2016 I worked as a Lifeguard and Swim Lesson Instructor. From 2016 to 2017 the Facility Manager role tasked me with coordinating lifeguard training and work schedules, logging and updating regulatory and procedural paperwork, and maintaining pool chemical levels and safety equipment, while continuing to lifeguard.
