Under the supervision of Dr. Sean Schoville, PhD and Zachary Cohen, PhDWe aimed to investigate how the gut microbial community of CPB varies between different generations, particularly about their adaptation to agricultural host plants and insecticides. This question is novel because it focuses on understanding the microbial dynamics within the CPB population over time, considering factors such as host plant shifts and insecticide tolerance.The system we employed, utilizing RNA read data and bioinformatic tools to analyze viral diversity within the CPB gut microbiome, represents an improvement over traditional methods. In the past, researchers may have relied solely on culturing techniques; however, our approach allows for a more comprehensive analysis of the entire viral community present in the beetles' guts, providing a more nuanced understanding of their microbiome dynamics.By comparing the viral diversity between different generations of CPB, our research sheds light on how these beetles adapt to changing environments and management practices. This information could inform the development of more targeted and sustainable pest management strategies, ultimately benefiting agricultural production in Wisconsin and actually the world!
