Intern For Award-Winning Letter Writing ProjectWriting Back Sep 2018 - Jun 2019Leeds, United KingdomWorking for an award-winning letter writing project tackling social isolation and loneliness. Based in the University of Leeds, the scheme paired undergraduate and international postgraduate students with older local residents as pen pals to encourage cross-generational communication and foster lasting friendships. Day-to-day, I completed administrative tasks such as scanning and digitally filing pen pals’ letters, transcribing letters for data research and posting items. Data input was a daily duty and I used Microsoft Access and Excel to store and organise all of the project’s information on participants and the other charities involved. Event management was also a key part of the role, and I was given responsibility of organising and running the meet-up events with over one-hundred attendees. Alongside Dr Georgina Binnie, I recruited and trained student volunteers, delivering presentations and workshops on the project. Using the different social media channels and the Writing Back website’s blog, I helped with the marketing of the project, optimising its online profile to represent the successes of the scheme and attract new volunteers. In January, a new project intern was hired and I was given sole responsibility of training her and teaching her how to use the different databases and platforms. After I had gained good experience, I was asked to represent the scheme in meetings and workshops with local and north east organisations from the arts industry to discuss loneliness in different age groups. My one-year contract ended when I graduated and I am now looking to expand my professional career using the skill set I have developed in this role.
