Holding an assistant role comes with a diverse range of roles and responsibilities, from operating the pot wash system to working with other members of kitchen staff to serve four course dinners to an excess of 250 people. Such tasks require following instructions but also using one's own initiative on occasions when everybody is working to their full capacity under pressure. One such example is working individually on the pot wash system, to which I was a novice at the time, during a function for around 250 people where quick turnovers were necessary to ensure crockery and cutlery was ready to use for subsequent courses.

Assisting with the production of bakery goods, such as blocking out pies, and serving customers in the shop requires prioritising tasks and communicating within a team to keep the business running smoothly and consistently providing both quality products and customer service.

I observed and assisted with art and design lessons in a class of mixed age and a diverse range of needs. From this, I learned non-verbal communication can be as important as verbal, and the importance of classroom safety.

Through Ripley St Thomas Sixth Form's 'Aspiring Teacher's Scheme', I observed lesson structures and teacher-pupil interactions in a year 1 class, whilst assisting students with their reading and preparing arts and crafts activities. Taking on one of the teacher assistants' roles in organising the pupil's reading to take home provided an insight into the organisation and planning necessary in providing a sound education outside of the classroom, as well as how to communicate more effectively with a specific age group.
