Women are 51% of the American population, yet only 19% of Congress. That is legislation without representation. Given those numbers, it is not surprising that bills on women’s issues get buried.The FAMILY Act is one of those bills. We are the only industrialized nation without mandatory paid leave for parents. The FAMILY Act, which is in Congress now, provides for 12 weeks paid parental leave. It is a self-funded program that does not add to the federal budget, and it only requires two tenths of one percent of your pay.Wouldn’t you pay $1.50 a week to stay home with your newborn?It’s legislation like the FAMILY Act that the women and mothers of America need to know about. I believe that if American families knew what Congress has in their hands, we could bring grassroots pressure not seen since the Vietnam war.And I’m not going to stop until our voices are heard.

The Milky Way Foundation seeks to empower mothers by trusting themselves, their bodies and their babies. We do this by keeping the mother-baby pair together, especially in the vital first hours and weeks after birth. We are working toward: legislated, mandated, paid maternity leave in the U.S.; baby-friendly NICUs; improved workplace standards for breastfeeding mothers; normalizing the image of the breastfeeding mother across art and media; and providing a legal support network for families involved in perinatal cases. The jumping-off point for our foundation is The Milky Way documentary.
