About Eva Schmid

I am a scientist by training with two decades of active research experience and an all-rounded understanding of academia and higher education. Besides a passion for science, I am motivated by a deep interest in people and communities. I have driven successful collaborative scientific projects in multiple countries and institutions. Now I lead the Scientific Training Unit at the Vienna Biocenter - a team with many roles. Our responsibilities start with the recruitment of young talent and continue to equipping researchers with skills that will enable them to thrive in their profession. An important aspect of our work is to provide advice and support for the cohesion of the community on campus. Programs we lead include a Summer school, a PhD program, a Postdoc program, and a Leadership program. I am excited about design and implementation of innovative and comprehensive training programs for all levels because they impact how we show up for each other as a community in an evolving academic landscape.

As a research scientist at UC Berkeley I worked on projects elucidating the physical principles that underly biological membrane organization, with a specific focus on immune cell interactions. Our team characterized how proteins organize at membrane interfaces according to their size and develop strategies to influence immune decisions using simple protein design principles. I co-supervised a team of students and postdocs who work on immune related projects in the lab and I established and coordinated collaborations with LBNL, CZ Biohub, Aduro Biotech/IVRI, NCI and more. I also actively performed in vitro and cell biology experiments, and used biochemical assays as well as fluorescent microscopy and flow-cytometry to characterize cellular behavior. I analyzed data, wrote publications and grants, and presented our work at international seminars and conferences. Additionally I organized and led training initiatives for students and postdocs, acted as a mentor, mediator, lab manager, and administrator.I am now affiliated with UC Berkeley as a Visiting Scientist and Senior Consultant to the Fletcher Lab.
