Ski Patrol

Current

At Northstar I work with a team of around 30 full time professional Ski Patrollers. Everyone holds a EMT, WEMT, or OEC certification. I have a current OEC and I will be pursuing my WEMT this August with NOLS. Our daily duties include: medical equipment checks, hazard marking, safety signage, guest service and education, assessment of closed terrain before opening to the public, and avalanche mitigation on snow days by use of explosives. We conduct weekly trainings on: medical scenarios, toboggan rescue, lift evacuation, and other general patrol skills. However, our first priority is always as the First Responders to any on hill emergency. At Northstar we receive a high volume of injuries. In two seasons I alone was the First Responder on approximately 85 injuries. I have strong training and experience splinting injuries to all extremities, c-spine immobilization, head injury assessment, multi-system trauma assessment, and I have been on scene for multiple life threatening rapid evacuation rescues. All rescues and training we do involves a highly professional level of teamwork and communication. We work in severe weather conditions, in dangerous situations, and with serious traumatic injuries. Stress management is an extremely important and valuable skill we possess.I am truly passionate about first response, so much so I was voted the Rookie of the year my first season by my peers. I strive to pursue a career in Ski Patrol.

Trip Leader

The World

In three seasons with Backroads I have lead trips Yosemite, Redwood National Park, The Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Park. In Europe I have lead in Northern and Central Italy and worked on the logistics side of our operation in France, Spain, and Ireland. Our tours specialize in cycling, hiking, and multi-sport adventures. Every day combines a full days worth of active travel with cultural experiences, environmental education, and local history. We move locations every two to three days by bike. Before trips start we prepare by planning out a week's worth of meals, personalizing and inspecting the bicycles, checking equipment, confirming all accommodations, reservations, and sub-contractors. I prepare for the guests and their questions by studying the natural and social history of the area, the culture and ecology, and anticipating what they look for in a great vacation. Then it's go time! Three leaders, two vans and a trailer, some notes, and a heads full of knowledge. It's all we need to create a memorable and meaningful trip.During a trip I work with two to three other leaders and together we handle 100% of the trip logistics. We prepare guests bikes in the morning, present an overview of the route and area, provide route and mechanical support during the daily ride, and provide a mid day meal all while acting as an interpreter into the environmental and cultural histories of the region. Our trips run for a week and we often work with a new team of leaders every trip. I've lead groups of guests as small as four and as large as twenty six. I've worked and lived successfully with people thirty years apart in age, from multiple different nationalities, and hundreds of different backgrounds. We receive personal feedback from the guests on our leading styles after every trip. In 24 trips I have received 143 guest reviews with an average score of 9.52.

Associate Head Counselor & Programmer For Camper In Leadership Training Program (Cilt)

Bass Lake, California

I worked on a team of three directors and six administrators to run a youth summer camp for 10 consecutive weeks We trained and empowered 50 staff members to successfully and safely look after 800 campers ages 6 - 17. We then managed the staff and campers for three months on a 6 day a week 24 hour a day schedule. As the Program Lead for Camper in Leadership Training Program I designed and taught a month long leadership curriculum for high school campers. The program included workshops five days a week focusing on teamwork and leadership skills. Three days of the week included a Red Cross Lifeguard certification course. Campers in the program were also required to lead camp wide activities and orchestrate a camp improvement project. We built new signage for the activity centers at campThroughout the program I conducted frequent check ins with all campers in the program to build trust, address their needs, and ensure success in the program. At the end I completed in depth evaluations for every camper and created a 22 page detailed program overview to establish a structure for future program leads.
