About Ewan Harrison

I am an architectural historian with a particular interest in the mid and late 20th century. I am currently undertaking a PhD at the University of Liverpool, examining the work of Richard Seifert and Partners, Britain's largest commercial architectural practice during the post-war period. I have extensive experience in researching and writing about the built and designed landscape, in all aspects of heritage in the planning process, and in providing administrative support to major academic projects.

my PhD working title is 'Richard Seifert and Partners: Commercial Architecture During the Post-War Compromise.' It examines the work of Britain's largest commercial architecture practice in the post-war period and the social, political and economic context for commercial architecture in the period from 1953-1984. Richard Seifert and Partners rose from obscure beginnings to prominence during the commercial property boom of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The practice originally concentrated on designing large office blocks in London, before expanding to design hotels, private hospitals, conference centres, town centre regeneration schemes, retail parks and travel infrastructure. At its height the practice boasted UK branch offices in Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow, as well as a subsidiary practice in Australia, and it undertook commissions around the world. It's best regarded buildings are Centre Point and Space House in London, and the Alpha Tower in Birmingham, all of which are Grade II listed buildings.
