About Ewan Robertson

As a recent graduate in Mechanical Engineering, I now work at Wood PLC as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer in the Operations P&E team. My role involves managing engineering packages, ensuring technical specifications and quality standards are met while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. I previously led a group master's project at Universidad de Oviedo, optimizing a tufting robot by enhancing its functionality and introducing innovative design elements. My background includes experience as a Design Consultant Engineer with the Edinburgh startup "Metacarpal," where I improved the functionality of a fully mechanical prosthetic hand. I am passionate about using engineering to create positive societal impacts, particularly in product design, robotics, Medtech, and sustainability.Throughout my academic journey, I contributed to projects like the "art-eaux-matic," an assistive device for individuals with disabilities, and conducted research on materials for EBUS-TBNA procedures for my dissertation. Additionally, I launched "Ataraxis," a personal brand that combines my drawing skills with mental health awareness through wearable art.I am excited to further develop my skills and work towards my chartership at Wood, taking on new challenges and continuing my engineering journey.

  • Louisiana State University
    Lead Mechanical Engineer
Louisiana State University Sep 2021 - May 2022
    Louisiana, United States
As a Mechanical Engineer at Louisiana State University (LSU), I served as the lead mechanical engineer for the "Art-eaux-matic" capstone project. This project aimed to redesign an assistive painting device for a young client with cerebral palsy, allowing them to create art using their eye and head movements.Working within a cross-functional team of four, I was responsible for the mechanical aspects of the project. My main task was to design a gantry system integrated with a collapsible easel board. This gantry system facilitated precise brush movement on the canvas, enabling the user to paint with their eye and head movements. Notably, we developed an adjustable brush end actuator for dynamic brush rotation in all directions. We prioritised creating a lightweight and portable mechanical system, making it easy for caregivers to handle. Sustainability was a core consideration, leading us to repurpose components, use recycled materials, and conduct in-house remanufacturing. To ensure the mechanical system's integrity, I conducted extensive analyses using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and analytical calculations. We also performed rigorous testing to confirm alignment, functionality, and safety. For intricate components, such as the brush end actuator, we employed 3D printing technology. My role as the lead mechanical engineer in the "Art-eaux-matic" project was a rewarding experience. I contributed to the development of an innovative assistive painting device, making a real difference in the life of a young artist with special needs, all while gaining valuable insights into mechanical engineering, design, sustainability, and teamwork.
