About Ewan Mceoin

Ewan McEoin is the Senior Curator of the Department of Contemporary Art, and Department of Contemporary Design and Architecture at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne (NGV), Australia’s largest and most visited gallery.McEoin has nearly three decades of experience at the forefront of the international art, design, and architecture sectors, working in strategy, curating, and publishing.McEoin was a long-standing editor of (inside) Australia Design Review, one of Australia's leading professional journals for the interior and product design sectors. From (inside) in 2004 Ewan was appointed creative director of Euroluce, Australia's leading commercial lighting supplier. In 2007 he founded Studio Propeller, an independent design strategy consultancy – while at Propeller Ewan co-edited and published the first Melbourne and Sydney design guides. In 2008 Ewan was appointed the inaugural Creative Director of the Victorian Government’s State of Design Festival where he oversaw three editions of the festival. In 2009 he was appointed the inaugural Creative Director of Unlimited, the Queensland Government-backed Asia Pacific Design Triennial which was held in 2010.Joining the NGV in 2012 to co-curate the groundbreaking exhibition Melbourne Now, Ewan began to work with Director Tony Ellwood AM to develop the strategy for the founding of a new department of contemporary design and architecture – which opened in 2015.At the NGV, McEoin now leads the departments of contemporary art, and contemporary design and architecture. These two dynamic departments focus on 21st-century international and Australian contemporary art, design and architecture. Past exhibitions include globally resonant works, including three editions of thew NGV Triennial; 9 editions of the NGV Architecture Commissions, three editions of the MECCA Women in Design commissions; and noted projects such as Formafantasma’s Ore Streams, 2017; Liam Young’s Planet City, 2020; Quantum Memories by Refik Anadol, 2020; Broken Spectre by Richard Mosse; and Heterobota by Agnieszka Pilat in 2023.Ewan is also the lead curator of Melbourne Design Week, the largest design and architecture event in Australia. He has led eight editions of the annual event, backed by the Victorian Government, growing it year on year to now boast 300+ exhibitions, workshops and events. Ewan is an adjunct professor in the School of Design and the Social Context at RMIT University and a member of the board of the Robin Boyd Foundation.
