Rubona, Rwanda

In the Spring of 2022, EWB Purdue adopted a project in Rubona, Rwanda. The goal of this project is to implement a water distribution system to transport water from a natural mountain spring to several clusters of community homes. This would ease the collection process for the women and children who typically collect water for their families. It would also enable all community members to use the clean spring water, as opposed to the contaminated water of the local river, reducing the risk of waterborne disease. Implementing this system would decrease the probability of children missing school to gather water and allow the community members to concentrate on other socio-economic activities. We completed our first assessment trip in May 2022 and our team is moving on to the conceptual design phase.

Colquechata, Bolivia

Located in Colquechata, Bolivia, our water project started in Spring 2018. The goals of this project were to implement a water distribution system in the community of Colquechata, Alta to provide potable water and fulfill daily water needs of at least 50 liters/day/person for drinking and household use. However, due to drought, changing community demographics, and financial strain, the community decided it was in their best interests to discontinue the project in November of 2021.

Nakyenyi, Uganda

In 2012, we adopted an energy project for a local school in Nakyenyi, Uganda. The purpose was to construct a biogas digester that runs on cow manure and water, reducing the firewood consumption and smoke inhalation while cooking. It’s implementation was completed in May of 2017 and provides enough fuel to cook at least one meal a day. After two maintenance and monitoring trips, the project was closed in Spring 2019.
