EWB GT- Malawi Chapter was founded in 2019, focusing on sanitation infrastructure in the community of the Mpitilira school district. The insufficient sanitation facilities threaten students’ health as well as academic success. Since 2006, prolonged absences and frequent occurrence of diseases such as dysentery, trachoma, typhoid, bilharzia, and cholera have claimed many lives of community members and school-going children. The school serves a community of 614 students age 6-16 in the rural Chituwire community. In 2021 EWB Malwai in collaboration with Blessbay Foundation and Freshwater Inc NGO began the remote assessment implementation phase. Working with Malwai local NGOs, community partners, contractors, and government officials we have started to build the boys and girls pit latrine blocks. Our in-country partners are nearing the nd of implementation phase 1 and hope to finish building these pit latrine blocks this Spring Semester. We are in the process of planning our implementation travel trip to the community to assess post- implementation pit latrine usage, finalizing operations manual for long-term sanitation, surveys to community for post-trip feedback, gather data from the community & plan solutions.
