Engineer Without Borders USA (EWB-USA) is a non-profit organization that works incooperation with communities worldwide to create community-based, community-owned, andcommunity-maintained projects designed with the engineering expertise from students andprofessionals. The UNLV Engineers Without Borders Chapter (EWB-UNLV) was established in2011 and currently has two projects in progress. In 2014, EWB-UNLV adopted our first project inSan Francisco Libre, Nicaragua where the community had devastating floods in 2010 and 2011,which caused mass destruction and displaced more than 300 families. The families were relocated tohigher ground but in an area that lacked a proper sanitation infrastructure. To resolve the issue,EWB-UNLV partnered with the San Francisco Libre community to construct 41 two-pit compostinglatrines, which has eliminated open defecation and will provide compost for plants in the area. EWB-UNLV is on track to start the remote monitoring and assessment trip in late March or earlyApril to examine the latrines to ensure their safety and longevity for the community. In 2019, EWB-UNLV adopted our second project in El Cebollin, Guatemala as children in the community neededto walk 1.25 miles through a dangerous road to the nearest school. To mitigate this issue thecommunity created a temporary wooden classroom for the children as a short term solution. EWB-UNLV partnered with the community to build a two-classroom schoolhouse with a teacher office.Construction was completed in 2023. The EWB-UNLV team is preparing to enter the monitoring stage of this project. For the past 10 years, these projects have exposed students to construction drawings, specifications, calculations, and report writing in the post-assessment, pre-implementation, post-implementation, and monitoring and evaluation reports. The opportunities to learn some or all of these skills were given to all our 157 members in the Involvement Center. The project and chapter fees allow students to continue to be involved in these projects and increase their skills in drawings, specifications, and writing through the necessary reports.
