My research interest is in understanding the interaction between microbial processes and the environment. These interactions occur at multiple scales (i.e. single cell, community, and ecosystem). Bioinformatic analysis that integrates these scales and elucidates the spatial and temporal microbial distributions, functional pathways, activities and the environmental conditions that control such activities will provide a better understanding of global biogeochemical cycles. Extreme environments have an abundance of novel microorganisms and functional pathways; yet often provide a simplified view of the microbial ecology that can provide insight into more complex environments, life on early Earth, or potential life on other planets. Thus, my research has focused on the microbiology of extreme environments.
