Dr. Bernardino joined Vantage Eye in September, 2010 bringing oculoplastics expertise to the Monterey area. After medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, residency, and chief residency in ophthalmology at the prestigious Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, he completed a 2-year fellowship in oculoplastics, ocular oncology and ophthalmic pathology at Harvard's Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. After fellowship, he was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Emory University in Atlanta from 2003 to 2007. Before coming to Vantage Eye, he was Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, Residency Program Director, and the Director of the Oculoplastics and Orbital Surgery at Yale University School of Medicine from 2007 to 2010. While at Yale, he was also voted 'Top-Doctor' for the New York Metro area for 2009 and 2010.His clinical practice of oculoplastics includes reconstructive and cosmetic surgery of the eyelids and orbit. He has special interests in eyelid and orbital tumors, tear drain (lacrimal) dysfunction, thyroid eye disease, and rehabilitation after loss of an eye. Dr. Bernardino serves as editor-in-chief of the Open Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal, is on the editorial board of Review of Ophthalmology and contributor to Medscape’s Viewpoints. He also served as scientific reviewer for multiple journals including Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has authored multiple scientific papers and book chapters in oculoplastics. He also serves as volunteer faculty for ORBIS, the flying eye hospital.He is an active fellow in the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American College of Surgeons.
