I lead the clinical ethics division in Geisinger's recently established Department of Bioethics and Decision Sciences (the successor to the Center for Translational Bioethics and Health Care Policy) and also direct the Healthcare Communication Program (in the Center for Faculty and Professional Development, Geisinger College of Health Sciences).

One of seven founding members of this commission, which was established by--but is independent of--the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. With the expert leadership of Felicia Cohn (and now, Chris Feudtner), the Commission's charge has been to develop the standards and policies for the first-ever certification of the competence of health care ethics consultants.

In NIH's Office of Science Policy, I provided bioethics expertise to a wide range of programs and initiatives in biosecurity, emerging biotechnologies, and human subjects/clinical research. I also provided expertise in strategic planning and organizational development to reorganizational initiatives at NIH (i.e., the formation of the National Center for Advancing Translational Science and the organization of bioethics research, training, and translation).

Appointed by Council chair, Edmund Pellegrino, M.D., who led the Council from late 2005 to 2009. Served as the designated federal official for this federal advisory commission with responsibilities for research and administrative staff management, Council relations and communications, and intra- as well as inter-agency activities.

As a member of the School's leadership team, I was responsible for curricular planning and evaluation, for accreditation and relationships with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, and, for several years, continuing professional education. During my tenure, I led the formulation of a new set of learning objectives for undergraduate medical education at Georgetown and, on that basis, the design of a new, more "horizontally and vertically" integrated curriculum for physician education. Directed the institutional processes of strategic planning, coordinating the planning activities of a medical school, nursing school, tertiary hospital, cancer research center, neurosience research center, and other medical center units. Served as chief liaison to the University Board of Directors Committee on Medical Center Affairs. Also served as the chief executive officer's liaison between program planning and external affairs (philanthropy, public relations, and marketing).

Co-designed, developed, taught, and evaluated an interdisciplinary curriculum in clinical ethics for medical and graduate nursing students. Served as a senior consulting clinical ethicist on the ethics consult service of Georgetown University Hospital and on the Hospital's ethics committee. Co-chaired a Hospital-based task force on end of life care. Chaired Georgetown's institutional review board for psychosocial and behavioral research.

Directed a staff of writer/editors in the conception, development, publication, and dissemination of a wide, diverse range of written communications, from funding proposals to magazine articles and other public relations materials. Also served as senior medical writer with principal responsibilities for written communications concerning Georgetown University Medical Center.

Served as the assistant project director and editor for the AAMC-sponsored panel on the General Professional Education of the Physician (GPEP). Funded by the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation, the GPEP panel studied the then-current state of undergraduate medical education in the US and made recommendations for the reform of physician education and training. I also served as principal staff to the GPEP Panel's Working Group on Clinical Knowledge.
