About F. Scott Thomas

I am an in-house securities and investment management attorney in the Charlotte, NC office of Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America (TIAA). My current work focuses on supporting variable annuity insurance products, registered investment advisers, mutual funds and hedge funds at TIAA. My practice focus since going in-house in 2007 at TIAA has largely been on product management, registration, and investment and trade operations matters for variable annuity products and registered and unregistered private funds (including hedge funds and hedge fund-of-funds). I handle a wide range of domestic and foreign securities regulatory filings for registered investment advisers and investment companies, including variable annuity product issuers such as CREF. I also support our two internal stock life insurance companies on New York insurance law regulation and annuity product management matters. I am White Belt Certified under TIAA's Continuous Improvement (CI) "DRIVE" Methodology. I use this knowledge to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of business and legal processes within the TIAA organization. Prior to my current in-house legal position with TIAA, I was in private practice with large regional law firms in NC. My primary focus in private practice was on representing public operating companies and registered investment companies in securities regulatory matters. In addition, I also represented both public and private companies on asset-based financing (including syndicated lending), mergers and acquisitions, commercial leasing, early stage venture capital and general corporate matters. I use my broad and deep experience across a wide range of domestic and foreign securities and insurance laws to efficiently and effectively identify and work through complex legal issues with my business clients.
