Department of Neurobiology, Couzin-Fuchs labHow do insects sense odors? The way the American cockroach's olfactory system is designed, it seems like there is potential information loss when it comes to detecting odor gradients in space and time. In order to learn more about how this neural coding works, we built a computational model to simulate olfactory receptor neurons and their behavior when exposed to different odor gradients.

I started at subshell as a software development intern and continued as a part-time working student doing full-stack engineering in Java, Spring, and Angular.

During my bachelor studies, I was a full-time working student at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT). At my institute, the Steinbuch Centre for Computing (SCC), I had the chance to work on multiple projects in the scientific computing context.To simplify support structures for the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid, I built tooling in Ruby on Rails to migrate support tickets across different platforms. For our own web-based support tool, I extended automated functional testing (continuous integration) and performed an in-depth security analysis on all application layers using Google Skipfish.I also worked on an internal ASP.NET-based platform that provides students and university staff with virtual machines. Here, I helped to implement the automatic provisioning process and built a monitoring dashboard that polls and visualizes status data from the vmWare hypervisor.For my bachelor’s thesis, I worked towards making biomolecular structure predictions more accessible for life science practitioners. I refactored existing Python and Matlab code for running coevolutionary analysis of RNA sequence data and integrated everything into a single web application. To prevent faulty simulations, I built a parser in ANTLR to validate and extract data in the FASTA format.
