Profile bio

About Fabio Alessandro Facchini

My name is Fabio Alessandro Facchini and I recently joined the Immunodiagnostic R&D unit of DiaSorin having the precise role to discover high affinity antibodies.I previously worked at the University of Milano-Bicocca as Postdoctoral Researcher in Immunology. In particular I worked in the laboratory headed by Prof. Francesca Granucci, one of the main expert in the field of immunology. In the past years I took part to many projects, most of them focused on the biology of dendritic cells and on deciphering their heterogeneity in different clinical settings, including cancer and viral infections. I studied Biology and I graduated in June 2014 obtaining the maximum grade. In September 2014 I started the PhD in Biotechnology at the University of Milano-Bicocca in the research unit headed by Prof. Francesco Peri, focusing my research on the development of new modulators of innate immune response through a chemical-biological approach. I finished the PhD in January 2018 obtaining Excellent Cum Laude grade. In January 2018 I got a research grant type A1 junior that allowed me to continue my research on innate immunity modulation until December 2019. During this period I published several papers and in 2018 I won the first prize of competition “Young Talents Award of the University of Milan-Bicocca with the Patronage of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei”. In January 2020, my growing passion for immunology drove me to join the research unit headed by Prof. Francesca Granucci at the University of Milano-Bicocca. This experience allowed me to collaborate with many scientists and experts in this field and to greatly improve my social and organizational skills and my technical expertise. In 2022, I left academia to become part of the Immunodiagnostic team of DiaSorin.

Listed skills include Bioinformatica, Ricerca, Biochimica, Scienze Naturali, and 16 others.

Pro jects:1. Roles of Transcription Factor EB (TFEB) in Dendritic Cells (DCs) and macrophages. This is the main research project I worked on; it concerned the evaluation of possible roles of transcription factor TFEB in the modulation of the innate immune response.2. Human DC subtypes in the tumor microenvironment and during Sars-CoV-2 infection.I took part to this project aimed to investigate the role of specific DC subpopulations in different clinical settings, including colorectal and lung cancer, and during COVID-19 pathogenesis. My task was to collect tumor an blood samples from patients and to isolate immune cells from these specimens in order to perform single cell RNAseq technology. In this framework, I collaborated with di↵erent research groups at the National Institute of Molecular Genetics (INGM), including the one headed by Prof Sergio Abrignani. This experience led to two publications (see link attached)I also attached the reference by Prof. Francesca Granucci

Postdoctoral Researcher In Biotechnology

Milano, Lombardia, Italia

Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca - Tutor: Prof. Francesco PeriProject: Therapeutic modulation of human innate immunity through small synthetic molecules.During the first two years of my my postdoctoral time I continued the research in the field of Medicinal Chemistry focusing my work on the development and characterization of a new class of molecules with adjuvant properties. For that purpose, I collaborated closely with Prof. Grisha Pirianov at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge (UK), with Prof. Francesca Granucci at the University of Milano-Bicocca and with Prof. Ivan Zanoni at the Harvard Medical School (USA). This experience strongly improved my cellular biology expertise in the field of immunology. During this period, (in 2018) my research advisors, Prof. Francesco Peri, put me in charge of the organization of Microbiotami2018 international event, making me part of the organizing committee. This period led to three publications (see attached links)I also attached the reference by Prof. Francesco Peri

Phd Student In Biotechnology

Milano, Italia

Project: Design, screening and characterization of new modulators of hTLR4, in order to reduce inflammation in different clinical settings.During the PhD I contributed to the TOLLerant project, a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (MSCA-ITN) funded by Horizon 2020 EU program and coordinated by Prof. Francesco Peri. The multidisciplinary research project was focused on the study of molecular mechanisms of innate immunity, in particular Toll-like Receptors (TLR) activation and signaling and their therapeutic targeting. During this period, I also have the possibility to work closely with Dr. Ivan Monteleone in the laboratory of immunology headed by Giovanni Monteleone at the Università di Roma ”Tor-Vergata”, with the aim to perform in vivo experiments and test on colon specimens from IBD patients. This experience greatly hone my social and organizational skills, my cellular biology expertise and enabled me to approach the field of immunology. I completed the doctorate with four publications (see attached link)).
