Fábio Martinelli Duarte Email and Phone Number
As a Product Leader I have managed full product teams helping each PM produce the appropriate scope, priorities and metrics, and providing a clear roadmap and execution plan to the organizations. I've been mentoring new PMs to help them in their careers and doing consulting to help organizations develop their product mindset and strategies to achieve their market and revenue goals. I’ve started working as a product manager in 2007 after developing an e-learning authoring tool from scratch and selling it to a Canadian company. I stayed 3 years in Montreal positioning it in the B2B market, then went back to Brazil where I worked with various leading and/or hyper-growth startups either on ecommerce or Education. After that I spent a few years in Europe helping giants like Booking and Farfetch, before relocating back in Brazil to work remotely and raise my baby daughter close to the rest of the family. During my career I had the opportunity to manage teams with IT (developers, architects) and "non-techies" (writers, designers) in successful projects over 3 countries, design full products from zero to market, both B2C and B2B, populate product backlogs and bring them to completion using either KanBan or SCRUM or Waterfall Projects - whatever fit each team better, measure *painstakingly*, A/B Test and optimize everything, create interfaces building working prototypes to test new concepts and drawing the wireframe with Balsamiq or Axure. I also conducted usability tests, market research, competitors benchmarking, and, to understand more about the customers, I acted as a customer support agent or went on sales pitch visits to be able to talk to them directly and understand what problems they’re really facing in their business and what a killer solution could look like. I like to define a "product" simply as a "profitable solution to a problem". An idea becomes a solution with good product discipline, testing ideas, iterating, and being in the customer “happiness critical path”.

Head Of ProductSandbox Group Apr 2023 - Oct 2023I was in charge of hiring and managing Product Managers, Designers/UX, Data and Customer Service.Sandbox had a major challenge in 2023: Launching a single App that contained all content from other apps the group acquired: Kidomi, Hopster, Playkids and Curious World. In order to do that the team needed to not only work on a brand new App UI but also build new backend services to manage user accounts and content organization.During that time I divided the team in new squads to improve paralellism and not allow for other projects to compete for resources, improved the gathering of behaviour data so we could detect and work on funnel leaks and made CS into an active user research agency instead of just closing tickets. The app, Playkids+, has been launched in October, for both Android and iOS, all over the world. At launch it had 3.000 episodes in English, Portuguese and Spanish, and hundreds of games. in a freemium model. There were also room for new initiatives such as embedding Telmi, a children-friendly podcast service. I was giving support to the Content and BizDev teams in charge of SVOD and FAST channel agreements, and secured the budget and resources for building TV apps for the major brands. -
Expert (Teacher, Side Gig)Tera Sep 2021 - Apr 2023I've been teaching the class "Digital Product Mindset" at Tera, an awesome digital school that gave me full freedom to create the content I believe to be the most relevant. My major focus is to inspire people that are entering the field and also give them the proper tools to understand why the Product area was invented, why the companies need it right now and how to really fulfull the desired role, being able to distinguish this from fads and temporarily hot methodologies.Update: Also teaching the Product Metrics masterclass -
Head Of ProductOya Care Aug 2022 - Feb 2023I joined Oya as the first Product hire. The first mission was to implement a Data-driven culture with clear sources of truth and KPIs that meant the company is going the desired direction. With those metrics in place I create an initiatives roadmap to give everyone a sense of how we're affecting those, define quarterly OKRs and use them to prioritize the backlogs of 2 different Squads. Those backlogs are also fed by regular meetings with all areas that might depend on engineering (Marketing, Operations, Clinical...) where needs are gathered, documented, and prioritized. I also ensure that the delivery teams have organized processes and can operate in an autonomous and reliable way. Team delivery have been constantly on the rise, and OKRs have also been mostly met ("Mostly" is better than "Always" because it means OKRs are ambitious enough!). I'm also teaching the next PM to understand the demands of an early-stage startup. -

Senior Product Manager - Prospect BrowsingFarfetch Jan 2021 - Sep 2021Lisbon Area, PortugalThe extensive analytical work and A/B Testing developed in the Landing Page Optimization area showed a fascinating opportunity to better serve the new users that are yet to make their first purchase. The old area has been reshaped into "Prospect Browsing", putting a laser focus on the 1st purchase journey from the marketing channels to onboarding, building trust, navigating through our catalog and deciding to try Farfetch and understand why we are the leading Fashion marketplace in the world. My role in this area involves building powerful segmented experiences that address what the users need to see every step of their journey by adopting the right "growth hacking" framework, connecting Product and Marketing to make sure we are building a coherent journey, creating and managing the proper segmentation tooling to enable all channels to release segmented features and use the same consistent segments across the board. A major KPI that I am working to impact would be New User Conversion Rate. -

Knowledge ManagementVtex The True Cloud Commerce Platform Apr 2017 - Jan 2018São PauloI'm creating the Knowledge team at VTEX. Our purpose is to catalog all pieces of information needed to operate the complex VTEX systems and turn them into media ready to be consumed by the users. The team has journalists, designers and developers working together in full-stack products. We use a special blend of Agile methods to make sure we help the clients see relevant changes in the metrics they care the most about. The challenges are: * To communicate complex concepts to users in more than 20 different countries, keeping all information up to date in Portuguese, Spanish and English * To keep all information up to date in an everchanging environment, establishing a workflow that keeps track of changes and respond in a timely fashion * Measure customer satisfaction (for example, are users opening tickets after trying to use our Help? What information were they seeking?), build a backlog and lead a very small team towards delivering features that will cause the largest positive impact over the metrics. I'm also doing consulting/mentoring about the product development methodology for internal teams. VTEX is an awesome, vibrant group with next to no hierarchy and a lot of freedom, and this environment poses an interesting challenge regarding priorities and hard results. I'm trying to help teams to have a clear vision of their goals and the best way to achieve them. -

Product ManagerEstante Virtual Mar 2015 - Dec 2015Rio De Janeiro E Região, BrasilEstante Virtual is a book marketplace gathering 2.000 small booksellers that advertise more than 10 million books to 2 million unique users per month. Big numbers bring interesting opportunities. We're rethinking the purpose of a web bookstore and how it completes the offline experience. The first and major step is redefining the data model to build the world's largest dataset of Portuguese language books (Afterwards we can easily upgrade to other languages). As a product manager I'm responsible for the research needed to come up with the right model (including several rounds of brainstorming with the IT team), the conception of the new features we'll offer to the buyers, and the complete redesign of the seller's area, including the input and update of book inventories and the whole sales flow.Implementing innovation in a 10-year old operation has a few specific challenges. We need to make sure the company is always profitable, keeping eyes open for crushing bugs and plugging leaks in the sales funnel. Constant measuring with Google Analytics and Heap Analytics help with understanding the ever changing users, and constant A/B Testing with Optimizely helps with the discovery of conversion increases. Outdated coding is also something that surfaces in a site started so many years ago, so there's a delicate balance between refactoring things or leaving them be, based on the potential cost in man-hours spent in maintenance involved. We use an adapted Agile methodology to keep things nimble and accommodating of any needs that might arise. I manage the backlogs for 3 SCRUM teams, one that takes care of bugs, small improvements and requests from other departments, and two dedicated to major changes. -
A/B Tests Teacher At Web Analytics Course (Side Gig)[U]´ Universidade Buscapé Company And Others Nov 2012 - Dec 2015I created a 90-minute webinar on A/B testing in order to spread this technique to the Brazilian market and ease the dialog with clients about its usage to evaluate our products performance. This proved to be a minor hit and developed into a full 3-hour class that I teach every 2 months as part of the "e-commerce professional" certification course offered by Universidade Buscapé, the educational branch of Brazil's most successful startup. These classes are attended by several e-commerce sites and digital agencies. The class is focused on not only how to A/B testing to improve a web site performance but also why use it, how to build knowledge within an enterprise, and how to deal with naysayers.I am offering the classes for free when invited by local nonprofit think tanks. I see this session as a culture hack, disseminating a mentality of fearless experimenting and strict measuring that leads to surprising and great results.Slides are in portuguese only. -
Product Manager/OwnerDescomplica Apr 2014 - Mar 2015Rio De Janeiro Area, BrazilDescomplica is the biggest online school in Brazil, with around daily live classes, 10k recorded video classes accessed by 100k students all over the country. The classes are focused in helping high school students pass ENEM - the Brazilian national exam that secures a place in a University. My daily responsibilities include:* Taking care of development required by the marketing team to achieve their strategies (insite)* QA and bugs solution, working closely with the costumer support team* Understanding which internal processes can be optimized by improving our general admin site* Populating and prioritizing backlogs in order to achieve maximum impact on our users satisfaction and decrease of man-hours spent on maintenance* Designing features, wireframes, leading the UI building.I've also built a marketplace where teachers could create 50-minute private tutoring slots that could be bought by students. The wireframe was drawn by hand when suddenly a designer had a few hours and could help with the PSDs, a developer did the backend API in Python and I programmed the front-end in jQuery, rendering the screen from JSON objects. The student can see all the teachers calendars, buy a slot, exchange messages and class materials previous to the session. At the scheduled time the teacher opens a virtual classroom with videoconference, chat and files exchange, all using the open source WebRTC library developed by Google for their Hangouts product. At the end of the session the student could give that class a star indicating that he would recommend that teacher to others. The system would also record a great number of status so a simple SQL query would reveal if teachers were on time or late, if the sessions had the right duration, etc. The whole thing took 3 weeks from zero to go live. -

Elearning "Factory" ManagerQuickmind Knowledge Management 2003 - 2006Rio De Janeiro E Região, Brasil• I worked in the planning and building of a eLearning "factory" at Vale (the 3rd largest mining company in the world). The factory was a team responsible for manufactoring a large number of eLearning courses in a timely fashion for thousands of users at every division and level that got impacted by a new ERP.• To be able to garantee delivery, we designed and developed a software that separates all different components of a typical educational materias and allows for the reuse between different courses. This made corrections and building increasingly faster, saving as much as 90% of the average time without the tool, and all content adjustments were live to the users with no need for recompiling or reinstalls - which was critical in the large corporation environment.• Redesign of the traditional production stages of eLearning (ADDIE model), allowing for a decrease in the number of customer aproval milestones with no perceived decrease in the products quality of customer satisfaction. We also redefined some roles in the team empowering each member with more responsbility for the final result, increasing efficiency and cutting communication noise.• I wrote a few presentations on some of the ideas and their results and got invited as a featured speaker in 2 eLearning conferences in the US.
