I have been focusing my research fields on the synthesis, processing and development of reinforcing nano-biopolymeric composites by emphasizing the composition, structure, morphology and properties relationships, filler functionalization, and enhancement of interfacial adhesion. Fundamental aspects including filler-matrix incompatibility, filler dispersion and molecular orientation/conformation on the interface are the major concern prior to the enhancement of composite's performances. The lack of concordance between the theoretically and experimentally determined values of the adhesion strength lies in the fact that the process of achieving high adhesion strength is hindered by a number of phenomena on the interface and interphase. I am currently interested to study the synthesis and preparation of ultimate strength nano-biocomposites which involves interfacial modification using renewable modifying agents and other novel strategies. I focus to discover the potential lignin and its derivatives as modifying agent to replace synthetic agents in improvement of the composite's properties. My recent research focuses on the controlling macromolecular architecture of biopolymeric film composites and filler dispersion/orientation. I have applied several methods such as chemical modification via graft copolymerization with other polymers, surface layer by layer assembly, surface coating and introduction of functionalized nano-filler as structural constituent in polymeric film composites. I am recently interested in integrated-synthesizing routes to achieve high ultimate strength polymer composites with well-defined molecular architecture for packaging application. I am also conducting studies of the grafting reinforced polylactic acid composites via in situ advanced co-polymerization processes by using ionic liquid as the green solvent.
