Continuing from my previous summer project, I am implementing recruitment methods to enroll a large and diverse sample of patients for the validation of a novel ophthalmology Patient-Reported Outcome Measure (PROM). As more patients are recruited to the study, I am preparing to further evaluate the implemented recruitment methods and the demographic characteristics of our sample.

As part of the SickKids Summer Research (SSuRe) Program, I spent my summer in the Dimaras Lab working on a project aimed at validating a novel Patient-Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) for patients with various ophthalmological conditions. PROMs often face limitations in their applicability to a broad patient population, especially with rare conditions or in pediatric populations, if they are validated in a sample lacking diversity across different demographic characteristics. To address this gap, I implemented and evaluated various recruitment methods to gather a large and diverse sample of patients throughout the PROM validation process.Some key achievements over the summer included:* Poster presentation at the 50th annual SSuRe Symposium* Presentation for the Centre for Global Child Health* Recipient of the Garron Family Cancer Centre Studentship

Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania

Co-founder of Imara Health, an organization dedicated to improving healthcare in developing countries. Our first project tackled low follow-up appointment attendance rates in 2 of the largest hospitals in Dar es Salam, Tanzania.

Currently, I assist in data curation and annotation for the novel machine learning model we've made which detects falls through wearable sensor data. I've queried & filtered through 20 online databases for relevant data that we've used to increase our model's accuracy. With the data I found and curated, the model accuracy increased from 60% to 80% and false alarm rates dropped by 30%. I'm also working with AWS Lambda to run our models and host them for deployment in our pilots. We're currently working with 3 retirement homes in Ontario, and have raised a pre-seed round of $250k USD.

During this summer internship, I was able to gain invaluable experience in the field of healthcare. I was able to volunteer alongside doctors and nurses in being a part of the nationwide effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. I successfully administered an innovative laser nasal decolonization therapy to patients as well as oversaw outpatient monitoring during COVID-19 vaccine clinics.
