After completing my MSc in Health, Population and Society at the London School of Economics, I was offered a marketing and research position with a partnership between Caring Sharing & Company Ltd., and Red Ochre to assist them in researching the Chinese social healthcare sector with a view to launching the FHCG in China. This position involved researching and developing contacts in the telecare and telehealth sectors, international, elderly social healthcare and social enterprises in China and the UK. I conducted extensive China study and translations on population breakdown, national & local healthcare policies, as well as current healthcare systems, incl. service delivery and insurance. What's more, I carried out field research into service user needs, caring expectations and the availability of social resources like GPs, ambulance, home carers and professionals. The aim of my research was to provide a full understanding of the Chinese market opportunities and barriers, and to present strategic insights to the two partnership companies. As part of helping to develop the Chinese business proposition, I attended meetings with UK local healthcare agencies i.e. Barnet LINK (renamed as Health Watch in Apr’13) and reviewed literature on the UK- and EU-standard healthcare models and service delivery systems. This UK/Chinese contrast has helped me gain knowledge and an understanding of the types and areas of differentiation between UK and China. In October, I accompanied my employer to China to further develop the contacts I had made and to attend a strategic elderly healthcare conference in Shanghai. My brief was to network with local and national government officials attending the event as well as to explore potential partnerships and clients such as China social welfare associations, telecare and home care providers, local healthcare NGO’s and nursing homes.
