About Farah Farzana

My passions lie within social justice activism roles. Co-founder of Al Masaar SCIO, which means ‘Path to Progression’, I actively instil the ethos of grassroots-driven change to overcoming cultural and structural barriers. As a mother of two, I am also an active member of a Parent Council, which has provided great practical knowledge and understanding of the effectiveness of national policies. Community activism is where I aspire to be an influential person, to improve social justice and fairness in an independent Scotland where an individual’s potential and ability are not limited because of their socio-economic background, colour and support needs. After a ten year break, I re-entered academia to undertake a Masters in Education, Public Policy, and Equity with the intention of influencing policy. My dissertation focused on the effectiveness of current legislation and policies on the wellbeing and safeguarding of ethnic minority pupils and teachers in public Scottish schools through a Critical Race Theory lens. The study provides evidence that there are no adequate measures in place for people of colour within the Scottish education system and that the underlying white privilege of policy writers contribute to this deficiency. Experiences gained through previous positions in the SNP has provided an insight between the academia of Education and Public Policy and its political influences, with the aspiration to not only hold public bodies to account for social inequities, but also provide solutions for social justice. Furthermore, the broad scope in the Third Sector has highlighted that much more needs to be done on a national level, as public bodies need to be aware of their human rights obligations and embedding anti-racist practices. Always up for a challenge, ready to rock the boat!
