This SMU-X course is on Managing Diversity in Asia by the School of Social Sciences. Students learnt about concepts such as power, privilege, prejudices, identities various -isms (racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, classism) and the intersect and inform our lived experiences as members in society. This course involved working on real world projects with an industry leader, and we were very grateful that our students had the opportunity to work with Singapore's leading gender equality advocacy group, AWARE.Sharing in our classes were AWARE's Executive Director Corinna Lim, social advocate/storyteller Anita Kapoor, Singapore's only disability scholar Vincent Zhuang, and Pink Dot SG's Spokesperson, Clement Tan.There were many things I liked about this course. The enthusiasm x reflections x great project ideas of the students, Professor Jack Ho for his passion x eloquence x work ethics, and also the opportunity to re-examine my ideas and beliefs of fairness and equality in society. Crucially, even as a teaching member, I found myself having to confront certain deeply held beliefs about things we assume to be unquestionable, and reconsider whether they were social constructs and truly essential for a good quality of life.This experience had transformed me personally and professionally, and I would absolutely do it all over again.
