Over the past couple of years I shifted the focus of my career from biological sciences to information technology and computer science. After getting my BSc in Biomedical Sciences in 2020, I spent time independently learning technical skills such as Python, Java, and C++. Following my degree I spent time as a researcher in bioinformatics to exercise these technical skills for practical applications. During the pandemic I was a clinical researcher. My responsibility was to manage and analyze large amounts of clinical data using MATLAB and Python. During this time period, I particularly enjoyed conducting trials with patients; they were mainly teenagers from the Children’s Hospital. They were incredibly fun to be around, and I learned highly important soft skills. I additionally spent time as a teacher’s assistant where I acted as a mentor for technical skills involving data analysis with software such as R and Python. After my time at the biomechanics research group, I moved on to an Information Technology Analyst role with the Canadian Border Services Agency in May 2022. In this role I became comfortable with object-oriented programming and back-end application development with Java and Amazon Web Services.
