I am working to get Net Shape’s tooling standards updated for both North America and Global. The tools I am working on are energy absorbers for the front and rear bumper, door carriers, active grill shutters (AGS) and office furniture. All the tools are in the 1500 ton to 2200 ton press size. I am responsible for all quoting, sourcing and the building of all my tools. I also work to develop the part with the customer. This helps to insure the part is moldable and the customer gets the part that they need. I also work with the GD&T to establish a tolerance scheme for all parts that is realistic and achievable.
  • Summit Polymers, Inc
Tool Group Technical Leader - Asia
Summit Polymers, Inc Sep 2003 - Dec 2011
As a tooling engineer, I review tool designs for plastic injection molds from 35-ton to 1500-ton press size tools to include two-shot molding. I also am responsible for sampling all tools assigned to me. In an average year, this will exceed one hundred tools. Ninety-eight percent of the tools that we build are decorative parts for the car's interior. Presently, I am responsible for all Asian tooling, which involves reviewing all tooling sent to Asia and traveling to Asia to review tooling and sampling of tools. In reviewing these tools, I use a software called SpinFire, which allows me to mark-up the drawings electronically and send them back. This software also allows me to view almost any software in its native format. Having the ability to view all the different software's in their native format and marking them up and send them back is a huge asset, especially dealing with Asia. I was also very instrumental in setting up our satellite office in China. I explained the job descriptions to our employees in China and helped them understand what they were to do. I also worked with the tool shops to help them understand what SPI needed from them and the importance of an accurate timeline to assist in scheduling various help necessary to support programs. This is an on-going process.
  • Summit Polymers, Inc
    Tooling Manager-Asia
Summit Polymers, Inc Sep 2003 - Dec 2011
As the Manager I am responsible for the 6 people that report to me, which includes 3 Tooling Engineers and 2 Process Engineers and 1 Office Manager, and all the tools in Asia. Right now there are over 100 tools in construction in China. SPI builds over 80% of their tools in China and on an average year that would be around 160 tools. Last year was down and this year is way up; it will be over 200 tools built in China this year. I am responsible for the quality of the tools, and the parts that the tools make. Also I insure that all tools are to the tooling standards for SPI. I negotiate the cost of EC's and tool costs when needed.
