About Faruk Bhuiyan, Ph.D., P.Eng.

I am a professional civil engineer specialized in hydraulics, hydrology, water quality and hydrotechnical engineering. My experiences include modeling, design and assessment in the following areas: hydraulic structures, stormwater, sewer system, water distribution, LID; hydropower, reservoir operation, dam/dyke breach/safety; water quality, aquatic habitat; river forecasting; mine operational/closure drainage; river engineering/restoration; flood hazard/risk assessment; erosion and sediment control; debris flow; wave erosion control; flow diversion system, pipe spill risk, climate change impact, ESA and EIA. Both hands-on modelling/design works and project management are interesting to me. I have conducted numerous projects and developed proposal/work plans in Canada involving modeling, conceptual/detailed designs, surveys, CAD, regulatory approval, and tender package. I worked on large highway design build projects, municipal infrastructure and flood damage rehabilitation projects as a key resource. My strength in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling is based on consultancy and research works applying industry standard software, e.g., TELEMAC, MIKE Flood/11/21/Urban, EFDC, WaterCAD, CFD (CFX/FLUENT; multiphase flow), HEC-RAS/HMS/WAT/ResSim, SWMM/PCSWMM, Flo2D, CORMIX, River2D, SSIIM (3D), ArcGIS/QGIS. My past research & consultancy included watershed studies, fluvial morphology, and river engineering. I have gained an excellent knowledge of regional hydrology, river systems, mine water management issues (oil sands, potash, coal), and provincial/federal regulatory process and design/assessment standards/guidelines for water and environment. My professional activities included: (i) writing proposals, work plans, technical papers, technical manual/guideline; (I ii) teaching UG/G courses, supervising; (iii) networking, conference presentations, (iv) offering training courses, (v) reviewer of journals/proceedings, (vi) contributing to professional association and university administration.
