In my current role I lead the Committee Secretariat team of Policy Specialists and operations staff supporting Members of Parliament to deliver parliamentary scrutiny of Government policies and expenditure; provide quality control over scrutiny products produced by the team; advise the Chair and Committee Members on procedural matters relating to the work of Select Committees; and manage internal and external stakeholder. I worked in the House of Commons since 2018 as a Policy Specialist in the International Affairs Unit, a Senior Specialist in the Scrutiny Unit where I led a team of Policy Specialists, and a Team Leader (Clerk) of the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee. I was recently seconded to the London Assembly to play a strategic role advising the Assistant Director for Scrutiny and Investigation on transforming processes to enable more effective scrutiny and build resilience within the scrutiny team. I was also responsible for quality control over all scrutiny products; designed and delivered training to upskill staff at all levels across the team; drove academic-policy engagement for more effective use of research evidence and data; and helped lay the foundations for a Research Unit. Before joining parliament, I worked extensively in the field of international development, where I managed and oversaw parliamentary development projects in stable, conflict, and post-conflict countries like Egypt, Iraq, and Jordan. I was also able to use my expertise in countries outside the Middle East, including Fiji. In 2012, I set up an Egyptian company, Global Partners Egypt (GPE), amidst ingrained bureaucratic and legal obstacles, and political instability. GPE continued to deliver work with the Egyptian parliament through volatile post up-rising environment for many years. In 2019, I earned a PhD in the Health/Medical Humanities from King’s College London, exploring social and cultural attitudes towards health and illness in Arab countries, the links between failure in health systems and the larger political context, and the politics of access to healthcare nationally and globally.
