When I was young, I loved chocolate chips. My mother hid the chocolate chips to keep them from little fingers, but that didn't stop me. They were hidden In the very top of the tallest cupboard near the back (it only took me a week to find them from the other spot). I would sneak in to scale the shelves and grab a handful anytime Mom wasn't looking. I kept the ruse up for weeks. One day, the lower shelf below my foot gave way and I ended up splayed on the kitchen floor in a puddle of honey, pickle juice, cans of green beans, and shards of glass. I started wailing loudly, not because I was hurt (I wasn't) but because I could no longer hide my crimes from my mother. She rounded the corner into the kitchen, expecting to see an injured child, and immediately burst out laughing both in relief and amusement at the predicament I had gotten myself into.In my personal and professional life, I strive to be like my mother in that moment. Setbacks are going to happen, but if I can respond to them with positivity, they can be solved, if not more easily, at least with more joy. I still had to clean up the mess, of course. I had caused it and it was my responsibility to make it right. Mom moved the chocolate chips again and it took me weeks to find them. The cycle continued, but the positivity stuck. That is the most important.
