One of the strategies that we worked toward was increasing student body cohesion and creating a sense of investment in the overall identity of what it meant to be a member of the school community. A spin-off committee, of which I was a part, addressed the logistics of student flow throughout the building to reduce lost instructional time due to tardiness, as well as simplifying procedures and consequences to minimize confrontations between students and teachers.At Manchester HS I led a collaborative effort of teachers and administrators to establish the Positive Image Committee which worked to raise the morale of the school community through visible participation in community events, set goals for student/teacher/support personnel recognition to foster a greater sense of inclusion, and restructured the faculty processional/recessional at graduation to reinforce the close, interdependent relationship between teachers and students.The building was under renovation during my time at Thomas Dale HS, and I took advantage of the opportunity to restructure the chemistry laboratory environment by reorganizing chemical storage into compliance with EPA/OSHA codes, conducted the modernization of chemical inventory/ordering with commercial software, and petitioned for changes to the newly updated Chemical Hygiene Plan. During my term in office, I advanced the relationships between the CEA, the Superintendent and the School Board, serving on a number of division-wide committees with the full respect of the central office staff. I built especially strong relationships with the Assistant Superintendents for both Finance and Human Resources. My ability to craft and consistently deliver the external message of the CEA allowed me to successfully utilize multiple media outlets in our local market to keep educational issues in the public view. I redesigned and maintained the CEA website, adding a blog, Facebook page, and YouTube channel with the goal of promoting information sharing, rather than information storage. However, my greatest strength as an education advocate has always been as a policy analyst and strategist. I served on multiple Virginia Department of Education committees, represented the Association on a panel with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, participated in a roundtable discussion with Deputy Secretary of Education Tony Miller hosted by the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, and gave remarks on federal stimulus funding for education as a lead-in speaker to Vice President Biden. During my time on the Board, we undertook a revision to our organization's Mission and Vision, as well as explored options for geographic restructuring of service delivery areas. I also served two terms on the Legislative Committee.
