About Federica Fois

I have acquired a PhD in Veterinary Sciences, specialized in “Food Production, Quality and Safety” at the University of Sassari. This, combined with my experience as a research fellow at University of Cagliari, where I evaluated microbial quality of cheeses, and at the University of Sassari, where I evaluated the microbial quality of bivalve molluscs, has provided me with a solid foundation in scientific analysis, especially in the field of food microbiology.More specifically, as regards to Food Hygiene and Microbiology, I studied the prevalence of different microorganisms (V. parahaemolyticus, V. cholerae, V. vulnificus, L. monocytogenes, Salmonella and Y. enterocolitica, Lactic Acid Bacteria, Yeasts and Moulds) from several samples (bivalve molluscs, fresh meat, meat products, dairy products, samples of animal origin and environmental samples). In particular I isolated, sub cultured and identified (Gram-staining, Oxidase, Catalase and biochemical identification) the microorganisms.While, as regards to Molecular Biology, I applied PCR and Multiplex PCR techniques in order to identify some of the microorganisms and to determine the virulence profile of Y. enterocolitica. During the internship at the Statens Serum Intitut, I learnt some molecular techniques to characterize Salmonella and Y. enterocolitica, like Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (Salmonella and Y. enterocolitica) and Multi Locus Variable Number of Tandem Repeat Analysis (Salmonella). Moreover, I could process data using Bionumerics Software.My time as an administrative employee at Savi Laboratori & Service S.R.L. has honed my organizational skills and developed my ability to handle a variety of tasks and responsibilities.
