Shoes are what link man to the Earth, universal energies connect our bodies from below, pass through and go back to the universe from our breath. It is the way we live and our relationship with the Earth. Federica Sofia is the creator of the eponymous new brand specialising in bespoke handmade footwear. Born in 1987 in the Italian city of Brescia, Federica has grown up surrounded by a number of different artistic influences, from design and photography to craftsmanship.In 2013 she graduated as an Interior and Product designer from L.A.B.A. Fine Arts Academy of Brescia, with a project that combined interiors to the relationship between man and nature.It was during her last year of studies that Federica discovered her passion for shoemaking and it was a course in Ecodesign which prompted her interest in ecology and the authenticity of craftsmanship, distancing herself from the soulless approach of industrial design and mass production. After graduating, Federica moved to the UK to develop her skills as a shoemaker, working directly with shoemakers in Nottingham and London to learn different techniques, from the most simple to the more traditional and complex handwelt. Federica also has experience of making bespoke lasts, having learnt her craft at John Lobb Ltd in London and recently completing some last making commissions for T&F Slack Shoemakers (West London).Currently, Federica spends her time in Italy designing and making bespoke handmade leather shoes with a contemporary edge. Her product design background is visible in her products and retains her environmental ethos - combining craftsmanship with natural materials and processes for a symbiotic relationship with the Earth.
