About Federica Zagarella

I graduated in Architecture at University of Palermo with a dissertation on the testing and energetic-environmental analysis of lime-sheep wool biocomposites as thermal insulation for building retrofit. Then, I did the Ph.D. at Politecnico di Milano with a dissertation on defining a method, including energy dynamic simulation and GIS modeling, aimed at estimating the hourly energy demand of buildings on an urban scale. At the Politecnico di Milano I also worked as post-doc for 3 years, collaborating in international research on urban regeneration, urban energy and environmental modeling (LCA), definition of district-scale energy scenarios. In addition, I practiced as a teaching collaborator and professor in the Building Physics courses, both in Italian and English, both in presence and remotely. I coauthored many scientific papers indexed in Scopus. Regarding my computer skills, together with a solid knowledge of the Office suite and architectural programs, I gained a thorough knowledge of energy simulation programs (EnergyPlus, TRNSYS) and of the GIS environment (QuantumGIS). Finally, my level of knowledge of the English language, both spoken and written, is high.

Abstract: To plan smart energy districts in urban areas, the assessment of hourly energy demand fluctuations of buildings, even undergone to energy retrofits, is relevant to optimise energy system related efficiency and costs. Accordingly, among commonly adopted tools for urban energy planning, the more detailed ones base on hourly energy demand profiles. However, from the surveyed literature on related recent studies, often energy assessments are based on seasonally buildings energy demands or measured consumptions so more robust methods are needed in case of data lack. Hence, it has been defined a method for estimating the buildings hourly thermal and electric energy demand profiles, to be applied in urban areas within the Italian context. The method has been developed based on a georeferenced procedure which adopts available data on the national territory useful to define the volumetric consistency and characterize the built environment with reference to the period of construction and most widespread uses. For determining the hourly energy profiles, a set of dynamic energy simulations is foreseen. In particular, a set of building solutions, considering different envelopes representative of typical solutions in Italy across historical periods, has been defined. Such building solutions have been assessed as simplified building models, and the energy behaviour of selected zones, representative of the different boundary conditions options composing any building geometry, has been determined. The derived hourly energy density profiles can be associated to the characterized building stock in order to derive the assessed urban hourly energy demand. Once validated the existing case data, by assigning the new physical properties regarding the envelope and the systems to the building models, it is possible deriving the updated profile for the defined energy improved scenario.
