Profile bio

About Federico Martin

Growing up in an agriculturally intensive area of Argentina, I learned of the relentless challenges we face regarding safe and efficient food production in a constrained environment. After moving to the US for my bachelor’s degree, while learning about molecular biology, and biotechnology I was introduced into genetic improvement of crops and vegetables. This led me to pursue a Ph.D. degree in plant molecular biology and genetics working with relevant crops. Over the past 15 years, I have amassed a solid experience in plant biology research leading projects looking into plant physiology and adaptation, defense mechanisms against pathogens, and molecular breeding practices using genome editing among other things. My goal as a plant scientist is to continue acquiring experience and knowledge to help improve production practices, crop diversity and to ensure access to nutritious food for people around the world while reducing our environmental impact.

Listed skills include Plant Genetics, Plant Development, Molecular Biology, Molecular Cloning, and 8 others.

Senior Research Investigator

Current

Fort Collins, Colorado, United States

Taking on a new position at CSU but continuing my research into plant adaptation to changing environments by studying the role of QTL for broad-spectrum disease response. I am incorporating meta-analysis to study common genetic features (cis-regulatory elements and modules; CREs/CRMs) that influence gene transcriptional regulation during plant adaptation when facing multiple stresses such as immune responses at high temperatures. We are developing pipelines to understand beneficial CRE/CRMs than can hopefully be use as genetic markers to enhance molecular breeding while we continue using genome editing tools to test and modify such features.

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Current

Fort Collins, Colorado Area

I am currently working towards application of latest genome editing technologies for QTL engineering in cereals. The goal of the project is to accelerate breeding practices for traits to enhance and broaden plant defense responses against biotic stresses, as well as other stress responses. By harnessing the great natural diversity of rice we can understand transcriptional regulation of genes involved in these responses. These changes in are mostly derived from differences in promoters, including changes in transcriptional activator/repressor regulatory elements. By uncovering the impact of this diversity we can learn what cis-/trans-elements can enhance transcription and utilize them not only for breeding purposes but also as examples to enhance transcription in specific areas of the genome using genome editing technologies.

Jan 2016 - Present

Post-Doctoral Research Associate

Fort Collins, Colorado Area

Worked in different projects looking into plant RNA biology and post-transcriptional regulatory mechanism of gene expression. The main goal involved the characterization of SR splicing factors and their involvement in plant biotic/abiotic stress response, and adaptation to changing environments. For this, I worked in high risk projects to develop in vitro splicing reactions in plants and optimized protocols for in vitro RNA immunoprecipitation assays, and RNA affinity purification assays.

Apr 2013 - Jun 2015

Post-Doctoral Research Associate Plant Molecular And Cellular Biology

Gainesville, Florida, United States

During this time, I continued the line of work from my PhD project finalizing experiments and wrapping up articles for publication. In the meantime, I also continue my engagement in discovery and mapping of new mutants that could help understand grain tissue differentiation and filling.

Aug 2012 - Mar 2013

Research Assistant

Biodesign Institute At Arizona State University

Worked at Center for Infectious Disease and Vaccionology in the development of methods for vaccine production using plants as bioreactors. Research focused on methods using tomato fruits as expression vectors of epitopes against bubonic and pneumonic plague. Duties involved in cloning and and expression of protein-fusions of protein bodies and epitopes as a mean of protection and to enhance expression of foreign proteins.

Mar 2005 - Jun 2006

Student Researcher

United States

Research focused in hydrogen photo-production using the cyanobacteria Synechocystis pcc 6803 under the guidance of Dr Willem Vermaas at the School of Life Sciences.
