My role as a Research Fellow involved the coordination of research day activities on applied and fundamental studies. Duties include managing relationships with stakeholders to achieve the project goals, assisting in strategic planning and project management, risk assessment activities, setting work priorities, maintaining team cohesion, writing reports and scientific publications, and ensuring quality of research outputs. Within this project I have co-developed an innovative breeding platform for the acceleration of the breeding process in grain crops. This technology has now become a critical component of the Australian pulse breeding programs, as it allows to fast-track potential variety releases, providing better varieties to growers in a shorter time-frame. The use of this platform has greatly benefited the Australian grain legumes industry through the rapid development of >50,000 breeding lines to date, significantly contributing to the accelerated development (2 years faster) of novel improved cultivars. Several national breeding programs and a number of research bodies currently use the platform, including: GRDC via their Pulse Breeding Australia breeding program, NSW DPI, Agriculture Victoria DEPI, SARDI, CSIRO and University of Adelaide.
