Conducted two significant research projects supervised by Prof. Packer. The results of these projects will be published in specialty technical conferences and peer-reviewed high-quality journals, with the graduate students as lead authors. For instance, a conference paper on lateral offset connections has been prepared for the “17th International Symposium on Tubular Structures”, to be held in Singapore, from December 9-12, 2019. The results from both projects may have an influence on future editions of structural steel codes in North America and Europe. Thus, the technology resulting from this research will be transferred to practising engineers.Experimental Study of Laterally Offset RHS X-Connections:• Reviewed the contemporary design recommendations on RHS X-connections, including CIDECT DG3, ISO 14346 and AISC 360.• Identified the existence of laterally offset connections and the lack of design guidelines for such.• Proposed analytical models with design equations to predict the offset connection capacity.• Developed an experimental program, consisting of 14 isolated full-scale connection tests, to evaluate the proposed analytical models.• Replicated two of the experimental tests by finite element models, using ABAQUS, with the inclusion of a sensitivity analysis.• Made recommendations for handling such laterally offset RHS X-connections on the basis on current design standards. AISC Provisions for HSS Web Stability under Local Compression:• Reviewed the existing relevant limit states, included in AISC 360-16 Chapter J provisions, for local compression loading on webs of an RHS member.• Executed two laboratory tests on full-width RHS X-connections.• Collected experimental results from a further 76 similar tests in the literature.• Proposed modifications to future editions of AISC 360, based on an evaluation of the collected experimental database.
