Profile bio

About Bruno Feijo

I research games, AI, XR, interactive storytelling, and innovation processes. These subjects are closely intertwined and even share deep ethical issues. Teaching topics in these areas allows me to learn from students continually. I have been a Full Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Head of the ICAD/VisionLab R&D laboratory (www.icad.puc-rio.br) at PUC-Rio (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) since 1988. I was the Director of the Innovation Agency at PUC-Rio (2022 - 2024).What fuels my passion for games is their permanent innovative spirit and unique ability to be ahead of their time. Games, much like storytelling, are ingrained in human nature and evolution. As a subject of study, games are irreverent, restless, inclusive, and audacious. They defy conventional thinking and fearlessly traverse various academic and industrial domains, unshaken by criticism. These qualities are the essence of innovation.I'm a fan of transdisciplinarity and a long-standing advocate of the objective of training hybrid professionals who can naturally move between technology and the social sciences. For this reason, I was one of the founders of the Brazilian Computer Society's SBGames conference, which involves various areas of academia and industry. For the same reason, I pioneered three transdisciplinary research areas in Brazil: CAD, computer animation, and VFX. I was also one of the creators of Brazil's first Computational Narratology research group.More recently, I've been working on contributions to the new area of Data Storytelling, a less-known aspect of Data Science. Also, I've been investigating the compatibility between Open Science and intellectual property rights.I stand with those who envision a future where emerging countries like Brazil can significantly enhance their education systems, enabling broad, secure, and inclusive participation in the new knowledge economy. This leap into the future necessitates new educational models for digital literacy, which seamlessly integrate primary, secondary, and higher education with a focus on sustainable innovation and computational thinking.

Full Professor Of Computer Science

Current

Rio De Janeiro, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

I research and teach computer games, artificial intelligence, computer animation, computational narratives, and extended reality in the computer graphics group of the Department of Informatics. I also investigate innovation models that improve the linkage between universities and industry. As the PUC-Rio Innovation Agency Director (2022 – 2024), I worked with Innovation Processes, Intellectual Property, and Technology Transfer. I am the founder and Head of the ICAD/VisionLab laboratory, which runs R&D contracts for TV networks, game companies, the aircraft industry, construction companies, the oil and gas industry, and education institutes.

Nov 1988 - Present

Head Of Icad/Visionlab Laboratory

Current

Rio De Janeiro, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

I am the founder and head of the ICAD/VisionLab (Research Lab on Visualization, Digital TV/Cinema, and Games) of PUC-Rio, the first Unit of Innovation Technology (aka NIT, in Portuguese) of the Department of Informatics of PUC-Rio (1989 - present), with the mission of improving the linkage university-industry. Also, this Laboratory researches education models for the new knowledge economy, and one of the most essential actions in this area was to be the leading designer of the multimedia course for the technical secondary level of NAVE/Oi Futuro (2008). The ICAD/VisionLab pioneered new VFX processes for TV Globo (2005 - 2015) and Intelligent CAD processes for Petrobras. The ICAD/VisionLab also pioneered consulting services for copyright issues in the Brazilian game industry, including international cases.

Nov 1989 - Present

Director Of Puc-Rio Innovation Agency

Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

I completed my mission of designing the next level for PUC-Rio's Agency of Innovation (AGI), leaving the implementation and further developments to the new staff appointed by the Vice President for Innovation and Development of PUC-Rio. This new design, embodied in the new website (https://www.agi.puc-rio.br/), follows the planned initial goals. The basal goal of AGI is to manage and protect all intellectual heritage developed at PUC-Rio, offering support in matters related to Copyright and Industrial Property. Following this understanding, the design of the next level aimed to maximize the impact of academic research in favor of quality of life and society. To reach this new level, AGI should seek the compatibility of Intellectual Property with the processes of Open Science and Open Innovation so that the academic potential of PUC-Rio is always at the service of the entire community. Also, AGI should vigorously increase its focus on negotiating technology transfer agreements. Furthermore, AGI should promote and integrate the University's network of partners and collaborators around intellectual property and open science, searching for an evolution of university-industry linkages (from the pre-linkage phase up to the latent phase). To reach this new level, educating for innovation should be paramount.
