Our genes, diet and amount of exercise strongly influence our health prospects. For biologists it is intriguing to get better insights in how to achieve tasty, healthy and sustainable food and how our physiology interacts. Moreover, it is good to know how our nutritional needs alter during ageing.Per 2024, I decided to spend more time privately and to no longer initiate new projects. In my limited professional time, it is a privilege to (co-)supervise three PhD students in their scientific journeys about muscle health and pre-frailty, malnutrition in the elderly, and the potential of alternative plant based proteins, respectively. Next to that, as “guest-lector” I am involved in the design, development and realization of a new Masters program on Sustainable Healthy Food at Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen. In 2023, I was the proud winner of the “Wij Inholland Award” as researcher of the year 2023-2024. Various parameters of fit and pre-frail elderly people are compared to those of young adults by the application of systems biology, using various "omics" approaches. -
