Profile bio

About Fei Sun

As a researcher and a Ph.D. candidate in Chemical Engineering at Brigham Young University (BYU), I specialize in developing innovative solutions for enhancing the performance and safety of lithium-ion batteries for various applications. My goal is to advance the field of battery science and engineering, and to collaborate with other experts in the industry. In my current project, I focus on optimizing the binder systems for silicon anodes, which are promising materials for increasing the energy density of batteries. I developed a novel method for binder ionic conductivity quantification, which enabled me to improve the capacity of the silicon anode by 37% in the PAA binder system. I also innovated a 2-step reaction to increase the yield and capacity retention of the PVDF binder system. In my previous project, I contributed to multiple cross-functional collaborations to validate a P2D model that predicts lithium plating on non-uniform anodes, a major cause of battery degradation and safety issues. I have multiple skills in safety awareness, materials characterization, and electrochemistry, which I applied and enhanced through my research and teaching experience at BYU. I mentored five undergraduate students, managed and documented safety and cell manufacturing SOPs, and led in-class discussion and Q&A sessions for Semiconductor and Engineering Safety courses. I am passionate about learning from and sharing my knowledge with others, and I am eager to pursue new challenges and opportunities in the industry field.
