Voluntary Gis AnalystInternational Animal Rescue Nov 2016 - May 2017Ketapang, Borneo, Indonesia• Using ArcGIS and Modelbuilder I created an automated model for processing monitoring data of released orangutans and inputting this data into the organization's GIS database, making the monthly reporting much more straightforward.• With the use of Excel, ArcGIS and Modelbuilder I created a process for automatically importing orangutan rescue location data from updated spreadsheets into the GIS database in shapefile format.• I created other maps on request, including rescue, monitoring, administrative and reforestation planning maps.• I used a DJI Inspire 1 drone intensively to map rainforests, palm oil plantations and illegal logging sites to help IAR Indonesia's conservation and lobbying efforts, trying to save endangered orangutan populations, and their dangerously shrinking rainforest habitats.• During my 3 weeks stay in IAR Indonesia's other centre on the island of Java, based on monitoring of wild and released slow lorises, I created a model to find potential habitat for them, taking into account different environmental variables like land use, aspect, elevation and distance from settlements. After I finished my model and analysis, I trained local staff members in the use of this model, after a basic, introductory course into GIS, regarding projections, coordinate systems, data types, data collection, examples of biological research using vector and raster GIS data, comparison between satellite products and using band combinations to help mapping forest cover change. -
Voluntary Gis AnalystAimm Portugal - Marine Environment Research Association Aug 2016 - Oct 2016Albufeira, Portugal• Using ArcGIS, I created dozens of distribution maps - spanning multiple field seasons - of different marine species found around the Southern coast of Portugal. The observed species were: common dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, Risso's dolphin, killer whale, striped dolphin, hammerhead shark, harbour porpoise, minke whale, fin whale, sei whale, blue shark, hammerhead shark, loggerhead turtle, leatherback turtle and ocean sunfish.• Using the same datasets I created heatmaps, compared the distribution maps with the local bathymetry and calculated the average distance from shore for sightings of different species and in different years, to see if there has been a change in behaviour / habitat during the last couple of years due to disturbance by unregulated dolphin watching vessels.• I held a 1-day beginner's GIS course for marine biologists, regarding basic concepts in GIS, projections, coordinate systems, data types, data collection, examples of biological research using vector and raster GIS data, including practical exercises of basic mapmaking in QGIS. -
Gis OperatorFlomatik Network Services Nov 2015 - Feb 2016Birmingham, United KingdomWorked in the GIS department on Project Lightning, Virgin Media's biggest ever network expansion project.• Updating VM's network in their GIS database.• Liaising with the planning team, planning manager and utility companies. -
Voluntary Gis AnalystAlaska Whale Foundation Jul 2015 - Aug 2015Warm Springs Bay, Baranof Island, Alaska, Usa• Using Excel VBA and ArcGIS Modelbuilder I prepared humpback whale abundance survey and related transect based hydroacoustic sonar data, created interpolated surfaces and rasters, accounting for anisotropy and a number of other environmental and data-based variables. I created 14 maps showing whale abundance together with NASC (Nautical Area Scattering Coefficient), an indicator for prey (mostly krill) abundance.• Also using VBA, ArcMap and Modelbuilder I created 120 interpolated surfaces from hydroacoustic sonar data related to focal humpback whale surveys, overlayed them with the whale observations, creating maps showing the movement path, feeding and surfacing behavior of the focal whale and observations of other whales during the survey. Also animated the movement path and surface events of focal whales.• Using the same methods I worked on focal patch survey data, creating similar outputs.• I created a bathymetry map of the area surrounding Five Finger Lighthouse (mainly Frederick Sound and Chatham Strait) for a marine wayside interpretive panel for a cooperative project between Alaska Whale Foundation, Juneau Lighthouse Association and Birzer Studios.Other, non-GIS related experience:• Passive acoustic monitoring for, and photo identification of sperm whales as part of the Southeast Alaska Sperm Whale Avoidance Project (SEASWAP).• Photo identification of humpback whales in Chatham Strait, Southeast Alaska.• Sea otter abundance surveys in Chatham Strait, Southeast Alaska.• Powerboat driving (Zodiac Hurricane 590). -
Gis Technician / Quality Control SpecialistCyient Jan 2014 - Jun 2015Reading, United KingdomWorked as a contractor for the Rural Payments Agency (RPA – DEFRA), involved in the Proactive Land Change Detection project.• Detecting changes to agricultural lands of England, which could affect payments of SPS (Single Payment Scheme), the main agricultural subsidy scheme in the EU. These include changes of boundaries, vegetation, land cover, ownership and infrastructure, and are captured from recent aerial photography, satellite images or Ordnance Survey Mastermap.• Digitising and mapping land parcels within the RPA’s regulation protocol using eSpatial's iSmart GIS software.Promoted to Quality Control department in August 2014.• Responsible for checking the quality of GIS Technicians' work and correct application of the RPA's regulation protocol. Identifying errors in maps and land parcels in the GIS database before they are released to the client and published.• Improving performance by constantly giving feedback to technicians regarding quality problems in their work.• Part of a small team selected for testing newly developed in-house tools aimed at increasing productivity. -
Voluntary Gis AnalystSt. Eustatius Center For Archaeological Research Feb 2015 - Apr 2015Oranjestad, Sint Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands• With ArcGIS I cleaned 36 sections of seafloor point clouds gathered with side-scanning sonars, each consisting of more than 1 million points. Prepared this "underwater LiDAR" data for archaeological analysis by producing DEM and TIN models and special colour schemes aimed at better recognition of underwater features. Highlighted potential dive sites.• Georeferenced building plans for the extension of F. D. Roosevelt International Airport, St. Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands.• Using high-resolution elevation models I created visibility maps for 15 known forts and batteries of the island with ArcGIS, TileMill and GIMP, making retrospective analysis of important historic events possible. Also created maps with estimated effective defensive radius of known cannons.• Created heatmaps showing the frequently used shipping routes for ships stopping at the island of St. Eustatius, using data gathered from 69 historical shipping logs, stored in the CLIWOCdatabase (Climatological Database for the World's Oceans 1750-1850).• Using ArcGIS and TileMill I created a map about Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the Americas, for the TERRAMAR Museum's interactive display in Bonaire, Caribbean Netherlands.• Created a shaded relief map of St. Eustatius for further archaeological analysis.
