I build, stretch and grow organizations at the intersection of biology, healthcare, and data technologies to deliver innovative, market-leading products and services that improve life.An entrepreneur and technologist at heart, I fell in love with science and healthcare after guiding Stanford Medical School’s early efforts to use digital tools to improve medical student training. This formative experience revealed how data science and informatics innovation can attack hard problems in healthcare with speed and success. I’ve been fortunate to found 4 successful organizations, including Ingenuity out of Stanford with the mission to radically unlock the value of the human genome. Ingenuity created a new market segment for human genome data interpretation and established our award-winning pathways AI platform as market leader, where it remains. After selling Ingenuity to QIAGEN (Red Herring Top 100 Exit), I co-founded a digital business unit reporting to the CEO and drove strategy for entry into the scientific software market. We established ourselves as market leaders within 5 years, opened up $80M in net new ARR, and were recognized as one of QIAGEN’s “crown jewels” by JP Morgan.Credible expertise in technology entrepreneurship and biology-driven healthcare enables me to drive innovation and transformation that creates value through: ▪︎ insightful “big picture” vision and ambitious direction setting; ▪︎ a design-centric approach that encourages exploration and experimentation to learn as you build; ▪︎ a systematic, practical focus on details “on the ground”; and ▪︎ an outcomes mindset that drives teams to chart their course to success. I fuel my work with intention, curiosity, humor and optimism. I coach to help others stand on my shoulders. I speak publicly about science, technology, and innovation. And I’m devoted to inclusive, open, and learning-focused means of bringing teams to tackle “big and hairy” problems in life sciences, pharma/biotech, diagnostics, healthcare, and tech. I’m interested in connecting with others, and open to senior (C-level) opportunities, doing the same.Outside work, I recharge by traveling to new places, celebrating (pretty much anything) with our friends, connecting with family and colleagues in other countries, and skiing whenever I can. I keep my right brain growing through theater, film, dance, and the visual arts. I’ve also started exploring what appear to be the two other enormous challenges of our time—the climate crisis and effective, sustainable democracies—to see where I might contribute.
