For 20 years I have worked to provide more equitable educational opportunities for K-12 students, particularly for students of color and low-income. I have worked in multiple contexts: in traditional schools and districts as well as within charter schools; in startup organizations, well-established organizations, and organizations in need of turnaround; at the school level as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal; in publicly-funded organizations and non-profits, and at the district, state, and federal levels. Some of my most rewarding experiences were as the founding principal of a high school in Southeast DC that has the highest performing students in any open-enrollment school in the District, being the Director of Charter Schools in NYC's Office of Small Schools, and in my most recent district work in Union City, CA, I helped teachers and families start a school-within-a-school, and worked with the middle and high school administrators, teachers, and parents to to reform grading and assessments and to open access to honors and advanced classes that ultimately resulted in doubling the number of African-American and Latino students enrolled in, and passing, those classes districtwide. As a consultant, I work with teachers, principals, and district administrators (and with organizations that support schools and districts) to improve the quality of teaching and learning for all students, particularly those who have been historically underserved. I have two strands of work:1) Through coaching, improve school and district leaders' capacity to be equity-minded instructional leaders2) Through professional development sessions and ongoing support, provide learning experiences for teachers to create stronger assessment and grading systems that are more standards-based, accurate, and fair.

Our work with hundreds of organizational partners and thousands of teachers over the last decade has shown that this work reduces grade inflation, lowers D/F's, particularly for historically underserved student populations, reduces stress in classrooms, and consistently is evaluated as some of the most powerful professional development teachers have experienced, and has even shown to increase teacher retention.
